So, I’m 4wpo today, and so far I’ve done nothing but cardio in the gym. I’m dying to pick up a barbell, use the cable machine and start training back again, but I’m not sure whether I’m jumping the gun. Admittedly I came back to the gym after about a week and a half (no lifting, walking on treadmill etc) because I felt so crappy about my body. But now I’m missing my weight training.
Any advice for when I can start lifting again? I’m possibly being impatient and I’ll take all advice, I’m just missing my routine and it’s making me feel down being out of it

    Hi meg!
Out of curiosity how intense did you go in the cardio? I know it’s going to tough ring out of a training routine x

@hannahlaura @alexandranj feel fine doing cardio. I did bike and walked to start from about 9dpo to 20dpo then brought in the stepper and now I’m 4wpo and I’m doing the elliptical trainer but I don’t hold onto anything. Don’t hold on during the stepper either. Basically, anything that might mildly use my chest muscles I avoid, or if there’s too much movement around my chest area. My boyfriend has carried any weights across the gym for me (when I’ve done legs for example) but I’m still skeptical so I’ll start doing legs but maybe find I’m also tensing upper body (poor core strength, thus, rubbish balance) and then stop. So I’ll do maybe two exercises, feel like I’m being impatient, get paranoid and then stop. As for how intense, not at all. Bike on 6, treadmill on 5 (no incline for at least 2 weeks), stepper on 2 and elliptical on 5. Haven’t done anything close to a jog. I’m doing next to nothing, but I can’t stay away. However this doesn’t seem to be giving me my fix anymore 🙁 xx

@gemsehguh I’m so tempted to go and do cardio as I’m feeling fat, but I know that il see the weights and they’ll call my name haha.

Yeah it’s surprising I expect how even training legs you end up feeling it in the upper body. My problem is chest day is my favourite, But I was told by a few people not to train it for a good 2-3 months 🙁

Hey Ladies, I’m 8 weeks post op tomorrow and like you lot hated being away from the gym.
I’ve been doing cardio and legs but with no weights since 5 weeks post op, despite being told by my surgeon I’d be ok to train as normal after 6 weeks I was so scared of doing any damage that I’d still not done any weight training as such until yesterday……….I mean we’ve paid a lot for these bad boys I don’t want them sagging or popping out of place just cause I’m impatient but I have packed on half a stone and need to get back to my routine.
So I did some lightweight DB tricep overhead presses, bicep curls, standing 1 arm row, side/ lateral raises & then some weighted squats/ romanian deadlifts. They all felt fine with the exception of chest press and DB reverse flys, these exercises felt like they were pulling something and have made things ache quite a bit again today. So I suppose the upshot is try things out, start light, see how it feels, if it hurts then avoid it for a bit longer. I’ll be avoiding any direct chest exercises for a few more weeks just to be on the safe side 🙂

@hannahlaura yeah I felt like that at first until I picked up a weight and my body instantly told me no. As @emmakayee said, you’ll know when you try something. Tempted to try some squats using the smith machine, with no added weights, just to see how it feels.
I tried really hard to stay away but I’ve put on too much weight so it’s game over on the waiting. I’ve watched a lot of videos on YouTube from girls that have had their boobs done but also have a lot of fitness videos and they’ve said they haven’t trained chest for nearly a year after but they had unders and that’s obviously more strain on the chest muscle itself so it’ll depend on your surgery too. Though I’ve never been massive on training chest so I’m not bothered. I miss things that incorporate chest though.
Thanks for all the advice @emmakayee do you now feel like you’ve pushed too far?

@meg – I was just testing the water with the chest weights and as it caused some stiffness I’ll avoid it for a while longer I think, it’s not worth compromising the result of the surgery as I waited years and it cost a flippin fortune. I’ve done some weighted squats BB and DB, with no issues. Suppose it’s just trail & error to see what feels ok.
I do miss doing chest presses and I’d got my weight up to a solid amount but hey ho there was always going to be some compromise so it’s another week of cardio and legs for me 🙂

@emmakayee From what I’ve researched you can do back, arms and shoulders but you have to start really light. My back is the one I miss mostly 🙁 I did try squatting with the smith machine though and that was fine. Just hurt my legs the following day! Dropped the weight dramatically though. I know what you mean with the weight change though. I’ve had so much muscle turn to fat it’s unbelievable. All for a good cause though. Just have to be skinny & not shaped for a while 🙁 ha

Hi ladies, this is something I’ve been wondering about too. I haven’t booked surgery yet but looking at around first week of November. I’m usually in the gym about 5-6 days a week with mainly weights and it’s making me wonder how long I won’t be able to use weights for. With a rough ok date being so close to Christmas I’m stressing because I don’t want to be fat for Christmas ???? xx

@becky22 so I’m similar to yourself, but kiss your weights goodbye for a while. I haven’t touched a DB since pre op. I had overs, so the recovery time is quicker (had overs for that reason). I’m 5wpo Monday, and I used the smith machine for squats and curtesy lunges about 4 days ago (which went fine), but otherwise, as I mentioned above, cardio… cardio… and more cardio. So you won’t be fat, but you won’t be muscly either. I did go back 9dpo and I was on the treadmill & bike at first. It’s crap, but I guess over time it’s worth it xx

@meg so I’d be looking at a few months before lifting weights I assume then….
I’ll be having overs too, he said anywhere from 400-450cc hp. Suppose cardio is better than nothing haha! Xx

@becky22 not months, I’ll have the all clear to do upper body at 6wpo, but I won’t be able to resume my previous training, I have to ease myself in. I haven’t tried anything yet because I’m a bit skeptical, but everyone repairs at their own rate. You might feel amazing & be able to do it quicker. I mentally feel like I could, but I haven’t because my body might not be and I’d rather be safe than sorry. I think you can start again reasonably about 6-8wpo if you start light and work your way up. No chest tho.
& yeah cardio is fine, but man am I getting bored ha xx

@gemsehguh I think I’m going to be terrified when I get back into it lol. But suppose like you said, if you start off light you’ll know your limit. Bet you can’t wait to get back there haha. Xx

@becky22 you’ll be a little apprehensive to start but as time goes on you’ll be fine. Once you’re into it you’ll start knowing what your body can handle.
Well, one more week and I can get back into upper body, cannot wait to train my back again! Ha xx

@gemsehguh sorry haven’t been on here for a few days! I bet you’re counting down the days till you can train! What’s your plan? Go light and see what you can manage? Xxx

@becky22 no worries. I’ve actually started pushing my luck I think. I’ve trained abs and back now. Abs killed (but just the abs, nothing unusual for me tho, always hurts). I did back yesterday, I feel fine today. Only downfall/worry was I felt a stretch in the crease by my armpit, if that makes sense? I’ve been fine tho. I’ve used the smith machine to squat. So far, I don’t feel like I’ve pushed myself further than I can handle. I actually feel good. I have used really really light weights tho, embarrassingly light. I may be pushing my luck, but I have no chest pain, all seems fine so I’m gunna keep doing what I’m doing 🙂 xxx

@gemsehguh well so long as it’s not hurting then I don’t see the harm! Glad you’re feeling good about it you’ll be smashing the weights before long you watch haha. Xxx
