anesthetic and the pill Started by: siobhan

So as I’m on the 28 day Cerezette pill which basically stops me from having the physical bloody period, the nurse agreed that it would be easier for me to continue to take the pill to prevent me from having a heavy period on the day of surgery.

Today at a 11 days post op I have woken to quite a heavy period. I have tried googling to find an answer but many people including anesthesiologists have said anesthetic has no effect on the pill. I’m now wondering if the pill has been ineffective for a days, i’m really baffled.

I’ve seen a few posts on here about anesthetic messing up periods but none like this as I haven’t had a period for over a year due to that pill.

Can anyone shed any light on this or had a similar experience?

Hi Siobhan. I’m also on cerezette and have been since I was 15 – I’m now 24. When I had a GA a few years back I never had a problem with this. Although antibiotics do make the pill ineffective they shouldn’t affect your normal cycle as its the progesterone in cerezette which prevents us bleeding and if you haven’t missed a pill then you shouldn’t bleed. Something else must be up :-S x

It’s not the antibiotics. I checked with my pharmacist friend, he got his big medical book out and double checked haha xx

Ring mya nurse up see if she can shed some light on it, I’m an A&E nurse and I can’t shed a light but they r specialised in cosmetic surgery so they may know. Certain antibiotics do stop the pill from working though, I’ve just asked one of my colleagues who is a doctor 🙂 amoxicillin isn’t one of them tho and that’s what we were given so must be something else it’s defo not anethestic tho i can tell u that xx
