    Hi ladies

    Just wondering if there’s any fellow NHS workers on here? I’m due to have my surgery in April and have managed to get 2 weeks off work. I’m a midwife, so as you can imagine the hours are very long and involves a lot of walking, lifting and delivering babies in all sorts of odd angles!

    Just wondering how anyone else found the recovery and going back to doing 12 hour shifts?

    And do we need to let occy health know?

    it all depends on how each individual heals and feels i have taken 3 weeks off work i am now 2 & half weeks post op and my back starts hurting after i stand say for 10-15 minutes but there are some who are fine after week one i still have pain and bruising on my left side of my boob where the drains were so yes healing and pain varies from person to person i have a very strong threshold giving birth was next to nothing for me but nothing prepared me for this! lol just listen to your body xx

    Hi Emma, I’m in the same boat. I’m a HCA on an elderly ward and I go back exactly two weeks from my op date on a night shift. One of the nurses I work with has had a BA and she said she was ok to come back after the two weeks but deffo no earlier. She hasn’t mentioned anything about telling occy health though.

    Thanks for the replies ladies! It’s so hard to be able to judge it.

    My ward manager had a ba and came back after a week but I’ve not told her I’m having mine done yet!

    Hoping it all goes to plan, fingers crossed! Xxx

    Hi Emma, I work in a nursing home on a dementia ward..so as you can imagine there’s a lot of risks with residents hitting out etc. But my Clinical Lead actually used to be a surgeon for people wanting sex changes. She recommended that I take 2 weeks off and then just do light duties for 4 weeks once i’m back. Obviously everyone is different but I think 2 weeks is a good place to start. Im 7 days PO now and im itching to get back! sorry for the very long message lol hope it helped x

    Glad you’ve posted this i was wondering the same as i’m a HCA, and i have to do manual handling several times throughout the day, but obviously don’t want to ruin my boobies, seen as they tell you not to do exercise for 6 weeks? I was wondering if we’d need a doctors note to say we can only do light duties?

    Hiya Im a HCA & work on a busy ward I took 2 week off then luckly was on 2 weeks of nights which are a little lighter I didn’t tell work so I was nervous but just take it easy avoid any heavy lifting when I went back I mainly struggled with reaching for things but other than that I wasn’t too bad xxx
