The Boston Terrier has been nicknamed the American Gentleman as a result of its great, gentle disposition and its tuxedo like coat. One of the few breeds that is certainly ‘manufactured in the USA.’

The dog became known as ‘Hooper’s Judge’ and was a prize stud dog who was mated with several ladies. H-e was much dog weighing in at 30 pounds. H-e was bred down in size. He’s considered to be the ancestor of several of todays Boston Terriers.

These offspring were bred with some French Bulldogs and these matings offers the foundation for today’s Boston Terriers.

In 1889 the American Bull Terrier Club was started. In it is infancy it only had 30 people and called the dogs Bull Terriers. In 1981 the Boston Terriers club was formed to display these dogs. The American Kennel Club only admitted them within their stud books due to the persistance of the breed fanciers.

In early years, the markings and color weren’t as important because they are to-day. By-the 1900’s the types marks and colors were a vital part of the breed element. Based on the breed standard, the characteristic marks should be marked white in proportion with a black, brindle, seal or mixture of those three. ‘Seal’ is a word used to describe particularly a color entirely on Boston Terriers – a black color with red highlights. The white should include the chest, barrel and a group around the neck, halfway up the forelegs. In show dogs, shaped markings are chosen. A new variety of hues (red) Boston Terriers isn’t seal.

Compared to other kinds this is a relatively new type. A lot of the improvement in the breed has been made in the 20th Century.

In 1979 the Boston Terrier became acquiesced by state legislature while the state dog of Massachusetts.
