Many parents across the country are searching for ways to get their kids to get outdoors, eat better and become more effective. Farming is an excellent solution-especially once you grow anything children love such as a veggie taco garden.

When growing a garden with kids, it’s important to make certain the game can be an enjoyable experience or their attention will wander. Based on Charlie Nardozzi, key horticulturist for the National Gardening Association and Chief Gardening Officer specialist for Hilton Garden Inn, there is no better way to help make the garden important and interesting for kids than to grow a familiar food.

Nardozzi knows first hand how kids of all ages love digging in soil, and the important life-lessons learned when planting, patient, harvesting and eating what you develop. During the season, Nardozzi brings young students in garden exercises through his hotel’s Grow A School Garden plan. Through the community outreach, resort team members from the United States, Canada and Mexico use local students to grow vegetables and herbs inside in ‘Grow Labs’ or outdoors on the college grounds.

‘Gardening is a superb way to encourage kids to invest time outdoors, find out about where food comes from and how to look after the environment and get some good physical activity,’ says Nardozzi. ‘And it is a smart way for individuals to get together over a common task and reap the advantages using a fun dinner.’

Nardozzi provides the following tips for growing a vegetable taco garden in the home or school:
