Smashing the Myth of the Press Release
An artist uses years honing his craft. He writes world-class songs and performs them in a way that moves his listeners to tears. He documents a demo tape and sends it to record labels. He gets a deal and becomes rich, popular and adored.
The lesson: demonstration tapes will be the secret to become a famous artist.
Wait, you say, the test tape was just something, just his means of promoting his skill. It’s his power as a musician that got him the agreement and made him famous.
You are right, needless to say. He could have become just like popular if a record executive saw him in person, or heard about him from a friend, or as a result of a variety of other activities. For more information, please consider taking a gaze at: PureVolume⢠| We’re Listening To You.
Which brings us to the press release.
Somehow, the press release has brought on a status because the alpha and omega of publicity. Wanna become rich? Send out a press release. Wanna become popular? Press release. My pastor learned about ::Hussein’s Blog:: Buy Facebook Views – Indyarocks.com by browsing the Internet. Want to get on the cover of Newsweek? News release.
Advertising ‘gurus’ are springing up all over the Internet touting the press release since the answer to all marketing ills. Just knock out a release, large email it to editors, sit back and await Oprah to call.
It is a cruel joke.
Here’s the reality: the press release is no longer important to your potential of scoring free publicity than the test tape was to our musician friend. If he’d no talent, if his songs sounded like garbage, the best recorded demo tape on the planet wouldn’t get him signed. Ditto for the publicity seeker. If you don’t have a story to tell, your news release is utterly worthless.
I’m maybe not knocking the news release — it is a crucial resource. However it is simply that: something. It’s maybe not the first thing you will need to take into consideration when it comes time to get promotion. In-fact, it is among the last. And it is not absolutely necessary (I’ve gotten plenty of advertising with merely a pitch letter, a quick e-mail or a call).
If you worship at the shrine of the press release, it’s time and energy to rearrange your priorities. Here, then, are what are MORE essential than the usual press release in creating publicity:
1. A story. Here is the equivalent of our musician’s talent. It’s the very basis for your publicity efforts. Without it, your press release means nothing. To understand about how to produce a newsworthy story, take a look at http://publicityinsider.com/questions.asp and scroll all the way down to ‘Is my company/website/life actually newsworthy’?
2. Learning how to think as an editor. Oh, what a side you’ll have in scoring promotion total these pr release worshippers once you understand ways to get inside the head of an editor. Provide an editor what he wants in the way he wants it and you’ll do great. I’ve got an entire article about them at
http://publicityinsider.com/freesecret.asp Go there now and absorb all of it. Believe me, it’ll create a world of difference.
3. Meaning. Tie in with a media event, make your self part of a trend, piggy-back on a larger competitor’s story, but, by all means, make your story part of a picture that is larger than your company. Reports that exist in a vacuum quickly run-out of oxygen.
4. Endurance. Sending out a press release and awaiting results is sluggish and inadequate. If you really believe in your history, and you believe that it’s right for a certain media outlet, you need to fight to make it happen. Call or email the editor to pitch your story BEFORE sending the launch. If one manager says no, take to someone else. Should they all say no, come-back at them with an alternative story perspective.
Getting press involves much more than just sending out a news release. Treat it as seriously and with just as much value as our newly minted rock star treats his art and you will be well on the road to success..
