Smashing the Myth of the Press Release
An artist spends years honing his craft. He writes world-class songs and performs them in a way that moves his listeners to tears. H-e records a demo tape and sends it to record labels. H-e gets a contract and becomes rich, famous and adored.
The lesson: test videos are the secret of becoming a famous artist.
Wait, you say, the demo tape was just something, just his method of conveying his ability. It is his power as an artist that got him the contract and made him famous. To explore more, you can check out: Breast Feeding Methods and Recommendations – cosmeticsurgeryjhl’s Blog – BlackPlanet..
You are right, of course. H-e might have become just as popular if a record executive saw him face-to-face, or found out about him from a friend, or as a result of a variety of other events.
Which brings us to the press release.
Somehow, the news release has had o-n a magical reputation because the alpha and omega of publicity. If you think you know anything at all, you will certainly need to discover about http://www.4feets.com/lasik-surgery-how-the-excimer-laser-functions/. Want to become rich? Distribute a news release. Wanna become famous? Press release. Want to get on the cover of Newsweek? News release.
Advertising ‘gurus’ are springing up all online touting the news release because the answer to all marketing ills. Just knock out a release, large email it to writers, sit back and await Oprah to call.
It is a cruel joke.
Here’s the reality: the news release is no more important to your potential of rating free publicity than the test tape was to our musician friend. If he had no talent, if his songs sounded like garbage, the best recorded test tape on the planet wouldn’t get him signed. Ditto for the publicity seeker. Unless you have a tale to tell, your news release is totally useless.
I am maybe not knocking the press release — it’s an important tool. Nonetheless it is just that: a tool. It’s perhaps not the very first thing you will need to think about when it comes time to find promotion. The truth is, it’s among the last. And it is not essential (I’ve gotten plenty of publicity with only a pitch letter, a fast e-mail or a telephone call).
If you worship at the shrine of the news release, it is time to rearrange your priorities. Here, then, are what are MORE important than the usual press release in producing publicity:
1. A story. This is the equivalent of our musician’s skill. It’s the very foundation for the promotion efforts. If you have an opinion about scandal, you will maybe want to explore about https://storify.com/pasocosmeticqqg/breast-feeding-methods-and-guidelines. Without it, your news release means nothing. 2. Learning how to think as an publisher. Oh, what a side you’ll have in rating press over all those pr release worshippers once you understand how to get in the mind of a publisher. Give a manager what he wants in the manner he wants it and you’ll do good. I’ve got a whole article on the subject at
http://publicityinsider.com/freesecret.asp Go there now and absorb it all. Trust me, it’ll produce a world of difference.
3. Importance. Tie in with a media event, make your self part of a tendency, piggyback on a larger competitor’s story, but, by all means, make your story part of a picture that is greater than simply your organization. Reports that exist in a vacuum quickly run out of air.
4. Determination. Giving out a news release and awaiting results is lazy and ineffective. If you really believe in your history, and you believe that it is right for a specific media outlet, you need to fight to make it happen. Call or email the publisher to pitch your story BEFORE sending the launch. If one manager says no, decide to try someone else. Should they all say no, return at them with a different story angle.
Getting publicity requires so much more than sending out a news release. Handle it as seriously and with just as much value as our newly minted rock star treats his art and you’ll be well on the way to success..
