I know I’m being somewhere premature since I’m only two weeks post op, but I was planning a little more long term (and to be honest I’m also going slightly crazy from not being at a climbing wall multiple times a week). I had my op on the 20th of December and I had already planned a climbing trip at the end of February and a skydiving trip at the end of March.
I know we’re supposed to ease back into things gently so I was wondering what the chances are that I’ll be capable? How exactly do I ease back into it? Is there a build up to even being able to do a pull up again? Will unders effect my strength in the short term and long term?
Every surgeon I saw said I would be capable of doing everything I was before surgery but I’d need to ease back into it after 6 weeks. I just wanted some personal experiences! I figured it was best to ask people who do pole fitness and gym too since you’d be using a lot of upper body strength to hold your own body weight too!
I would say if your muscles are pretty strong to start with you’ll be able to go back to climbing but I have read online things like climbing may never be possible with unders. I only found this because it’s something I did occasionally and I weight train 4/5 times a week so was looking into it. To be totally honest end February being around 9weeks post op I really wouldn’t think you would be able to climb. I would definitely be interested to hear how you get on. But I’m 8 weeks post op and going well at the gym but certain things still feel a bit weird like going too heavy on shoulders or push ups. Not necessarily a dangerous pain just feels weird. In climbing you use a hell of a lot of upper body and chest strength and I would be really cautious about attempting anything too heavy that soon after surgery. I certainly wouldn’t dare attempt a pull up or anything right now although I do think I’ll be bck to full strength eventually. Sorry if this makes you worry more. Hopefully someone’s a climber on here who can better advice you, but from my experience so far I wouldn’t dare attempt even a deadlift just yet. I suppose for climbing “easing yourself back into it” would be weight lifting, assisted pull ups etc but honestly even assisted pull ups right now for me would be a no no.
the one thing I cant do , (and I am 10 weeks post op), is lift myself up, EG pull ups, all other gym work is fine. I would seriously reconsider climbing this soon, , its all upper body isn’t it ? Sky diving I assume would be fine, just strap them babies down! haha.
I do pole dancing and climbing too. But my surgeon said to rest for 3 months!
Hey Hun, I’m 12 weeks post op and 100% back to normal. I do weight lifting in the gym and I’m back to the weight I was lifting before, even going heavier – upper and lower body. I did a steady uphill walk on treadmill 3 weeks post op and eased into it at 5 weeks lower body. Just listen to your body but I can safely say I’m back to normal life horse riding, gym, everything! Go easy with the pole though I wouldn’t rush into that too soon xxx

I guess I’ll turn my climbing holiday into a city break somewhere else and leave everyone else to it!
3 months seems like such a long time, but I’ve paid so much money for them I don’t want to try anything too soon and cause any delays in healing or damage.
Would yoga be 3 months as well with all the stretching and upper body work? X
I was told yoga can be 6 weeks depending on how you’re feeling, because it doesn’t use your upper body like lifting your entire body weight on a pole.
I’m not going to do anything till 4 weeks, then just do 2 weeks lower body training and stretches and 6 weeks I’m gonna go swim and see how I feel after that.
I’ve gotta train for a half marathon and triathlon in may/august (oh dear)

@pollypolly So I could probably go back to basic yoga just to keep moving? That’ll definitely stop me from going crazy 🙂
How many weeks post op are you now? Good luck with the half marathon and triathlon! I’m looking forward to being able to go swimming again.

I just asked my surgeon 101 questions because I was so so nervous about the surgery. So I got a lot of answers. I then asked my plastics nurse the same questions and she gave me the same answers give or take 1 week 😛
But the surgeon and nurse both said yoga is fine at 4 week because it’s not high intensity. They also said that I’d be able to feel it if I was pushing myself too much, so just listen to your boobs and if they hurt when you’re doing a certain stretch then just be mindful!
