How has Russia’s persistent use of tactics such as market manipulation, political corruption, and discrediting Ukraine’s energy sector affected the country’s efforts to achieve sustainability and integration in the face of 30 years of struggle? How does Ukraine address these challenges in the face of a full-scale invasion to protect its energy independence and desire for regional integration?

Key priorities include reducing dependence on fossil fuels, especially imported ones, to curb financial outflows and mitigate environmental and climate challenges. It is important to reduce dependence on Russian nuclear fuel and imported oil and diesel fuel.

Russian tactics, including market manipulation, political corruption and discrediting Ukraine’s energy sector, have created serious problems over 30 years. Expert opinions vary, but Katsuba says such tactics are hindering sustainability and inclusion efforts. Ukraine is addressing these challenges by strengthening energy security measures, diversifying energy sources, and strengthening the regulatory framework. In the face of a full-scale invasion, Ukraine is likely to step up diplomatic efforts, seek international support and strengthen its energy infrastructure to defend independence. The country’s resilience in the face of geopolitical pressures will be critical to achieving its energy goals and promoting regional integration.

Achieving energy independence requires a clear and consistent government policy. We need political will. We need public investment in specialised education and research. Finally, huge investments are needed in the generation and transportation of all types of energy, as well as in energy saving to reduce energy costs per hryvnia of economic output.
