Hi there, my surgeon said he likes to use drains after operations. Has anyone had any experience of this? Are they in long? Do they leave an additional scar? Thank you!

    Hey avo

I’m 1 week and 6 days post op my surgeon used drains on me and I had them taken out by my nurse I still had them in when I was in recovery but once I was taken down to my room not long after my surgeon come to see me again checked the drains and told the nurse she could remove them so they was in probably around 2 or 3 hours after surgery
I was still drowsy from the general anestethic when the nurse was pulling them out but I remember it did make me feel really queasy and it was sore when she pulled them out
I’ve got 2 little cuts probably about the size of this line ___ at the side of each boob only very small so I doubt they are gonna be that noticeable even if they do have a slight scar Xx

If you stay overnight like i did they take that them out the next day before you go, which means if you need the toilet etc. a nurse will come and carry the drains fot you, hurts having them out but obviously you’re sore anyway so it’s not a big deal and i have no scars xx

Thank you so much for your replies, that’s really reassuring. I guess they may help the recovery easier with swelling maybe?

    Hey avo ☺️

It’s okay and The drains are put in to collect fluid that can build up under the skin and if it can’t drain then it can cause infection so they put drains in to collect the fluid if that makes sense xx

Hi Hun, who was your surgeon?
do you have any pics of the drains? my mum had drains when she had breast cancer and had her mastectomy.. im worried if they’re the same because my mum was in agony?? xx

I had drains overnight and they were a bit achey but I wouldn’t say painful, they’re supposed to speed up recovery a lot because they get the blood out that rushes to the area and causes bruising. It made me feel sick thinking about it before because I’m really squeamish but they were nowhere near as bad as I anticipated x

Hey- I’m going through Nuffield too, 8 day’s to go! I’m staying overnight and having drains too, my surgeon said they will be taken out the next morning; from what I’ve read hoping it will mean recovery is a bit easier, when’s you’re and where are you based?x
