First Trust my experience so far

So I had my BA on 14th Feb at Preston. My admission time was 11am and due to road works I arrived at 11:05am. My sat nav brought me through the closed road near Marriot but you should follow the road from the opposite side round by the Ibis Hotel.
I was in reception for approx. 3 minutes then the nurse took me through to my room. There was a TV and the toilet was right opposite across the corridor. I needed to use the loo straight away so did my urine sample and was told to get into my gown, stockings and glamorous paper knickers (I left these until last minute). After about 10 minutes the Health Care Assistant came in and did my checklist and admission she was lovely and we were shortly interrupted by the anaesthetist and another doctor who listened to my chest and they were lovely. Mr Traynor then came in and did my consent and drew on me. This all probably took about an hour in total and then before I knew it the anaesthetic nurse arrived to take me in.

It was a short walk across the corridor to the theatre and I hopped onto the bed once in there. She couldn’t get a vein in my hand for the cannula but rather than trying and hurting me she just got the anaesthetist to do it and he managed first time without it hurting. They were chatting to me about my job and before I knew it I was feeling woozy and that’s the last thing I remember.
I was then woken up by someone saying my name and I remember them saying they were putting a board underneath me to get me on my bed and I managed to shuffle over. It felt like only a few minutes later the nurse came in and helped me with my macom bra and then she left me to sleep. I remember waking up at 3pm but my partner said I was back at about 1:45.

I was in and out of sleep but the Health Care Assistant kept coming in to top up my water, take my observations etc. My BP was a little low and I started to feel very hot and sweaty, she also said my temp was going up. I drank more ice water and she got me some biscuits. She helped me to the toilet at which point I felt dizzy and hot but we made it. She then brought the sandwich I ordered before surgery. It was the best ham sandwich ever. Mr Traynor popped his head in to say bye and I am sure at some point earlier he came in to say all went well. I had another sleep and about 5:45pm they discharged me.

I was told to leave my stockings on for at least 5 days but that 7 days would be better. I have a genetic issue which means I am more likely to get DVT so I also have to have daily clexane injections. I cant take ibuprofen because I have asthma so I was given paracetamol and codeine.

I was home by 7pm via McDonalds lol. I was ready to eat more and had the munchies. I wretched a little after the drive but otherwise managed the food and then slept. I felt a lot more awake than I thought I would and took my codeine and paracetamol before bed. I set my alarm for during the night to have more too.

I had set my bed up with my back rest and side table with water and everything I needed at hand. I also took my v pillow to hospital with me this helped straight after surgery and on the drive home.
I would recommend taking slip on shoes and a zip or button up top for after. I wore my gym leggings, trainers and a zip up hoody. I took snacks, magazines, ipad, spare pjs and didn’t need any of them.

Overall the day went really quick, the staff were great and really friendly.
My fiancé came with me and he said that sandwiches could be ordered from reception for visitors as well as drinks.

Hope everything’s going well for you Hun! How did you feel on your drive home. My mums concerned that a 2 hour drive after the anaesthetic won’t be a good idea – I’m trying to convince her otherwise haha x

@louise6000 car parking is free. They charge £5 for wifi and for visitors snacks but thats it.

@jadee94 i only had a 45 min drive and although it wasnt uncomfortable I wouldnt want to do more. I felt quite nauseous. As it was mainly motorway it was smooth. If you need to do it I would stop regularly to move and eat or drink.

Longer either to be honest and that was a day on. I collapsed this morning and was really sick but apparently it’s the anastetic coming out of me. Going to grab a bed back rest later on you sleep

hi good to hear all went well . I’m due to go for my BA next thursday and I’m on the verge of cancelling it as the anaesthetic terrifies me !!! did anyone feel scared for this ? also are you in a lot of pain afterwards ?

@kate1212 that’s not good I felt ok after the anaesthetic although a little dizzy at times. I leave the back rest in bed and have two pillows over it and my v pillow on top. I just then move my v pillow into the lounge if I need it.

Lorna don’t worry. I had never had a general ever but they were really good and its just like a big sleep. Immediately after there wasn’t much pain just discomfort. The pain is bearable and they will give you painkillers to go home with. I was given paracetamol (couldn’t have ibuprofen due to my asthma but think most people get that too) and codeine. I can take 2 codeine every 4-6 hours but I have managed with 1 every 6 hours and today on day 2 I have managed with 1 codeine all day. You will be absolutely fine don’t cancel it is worth it.

It’s still the best thing I’ve ever done Defo don’t cancel. Youl be fine it’s so exciting xxx

I feel the same I’m terrified of being knocked out, I’m in on Tuesday so I’ll keep you informed but I’m sure we will be fine Hun. Don’t cancel think we would regret it X

You will be fine girls. Just prepare to take it easy for at least a few days. I have had great help at home but if you go with it and don’t try to push yourself you will be fine. Do what the staff tell you and you will be fine x x

I am feeling a bit better this morning, I have managed 24 hours without codeine so going to try to stick to paracetamol now. Ice packs are definitely helping and I am able to get in and out of bed much easier. I still don’t feel confident enough to take my bra off but will do later for a shallow bath, I am getting desperate for one now.

My left boob feels quite hard and the front feels solid , I am still getting air bubbles mainly when I stretch my arms but they don’t hurt. I can definitely feel them and they feel heavier today.
