What are people’s experiences of this? Did you use mask or needle? Was it scary? Was your partner allowed to stay until you’re alseep? Thanks
I had GA for my first BA a week ago and I thought it was fine, it was nowhere as bad as I expected and trust me I was petrified I couldn’t help but think what if I don’t wake up?!
For me I was taken into a room where I led on the bed and then the anethiest (don’t know how to spell it) put the cannular in my hand. which is like getting an injection but doesn’t hurt that much it lasts about 2 secs of pain more of a deep scratch and then he put stuff in which I don’t know what it was but it went all cold up my arm and I felt pissed haha and I told them that. its very bizzare but yeah. and then I got wheeled into the operating theatre and I had a mask put over my face and that just had oxygen in I think but it doesn’t sound like all the girls on here have that so must be different for everyone at that part. I panicked when that happened because I didn’t expect it but at the same time they told me they were going to put me to sleep now and about 1 second later I was gone. Its so easy. don’t get me wrong I was scared cause its more the fear of the unkown. but when I think back on it now I just think what was I so worried about?
and I had my mum with me who wasn’t allowed to come with me once I left my room to go down to theatre.
Hope this helps xx
They used the mask on me and then the needle, wasn’t even asked not sure if it was because i’ve had a history of panic attacks. I remember walking into theatre and saying ‘that was like walking the green mile’ i’ve never felt so calm in my life which was odd, i got on the bed and remember thinking one more breathe from the mask and i’ll be asleep next thing waking up asking if i’m alive which the nurse giggled and said yes then seeing these massive things when i looked down thought i was halucinating ha ha!! I had an amazing experience and high gate was amazing, almost 3 months on I could not be happier best decision of my life 🙂
Hi Aimee,
It really isn’t as bad as what you think!
I have a fear of needles (I had to get 2 nurses to do my blood test during my pre-op medical, one to actually take the blood and the other to make idle chat with me :)!!). The worst part of the operation is the anticipation of it. The actual GA part happens in a matter if minutes!
I had my op at Droitwich, they literally got me from my room, walked me down to the aneathsists room (the surgeon and nurse), I got on the theatre bed and the aneathsists put the cannula in whilst another nurse asked me questions… They gave me a shot of the aneathestic which made me feel really drunk and then they put the mask over my face which has oxygen in it (whilst I was in the aneathasists room) they then gave me the full dose of the anaesthetic… Which is a weird feeling up your arm as it goes in, but you’re do out of it, you don’t really have time to think about it until you’re off!
I didn’t have anyone with me and I am the BIGGEST wimp when it comes to anything like this – if I can do it, you definitely can! The thought of it is 100 times worse than the actual thing 🙂 xx
heyy when i went down and was asked to lie on the bed they put the canula in my hand, water down it and then something else not sure what it made you feel drunk i remember telling them that the celling was moving lol, they then wheeled me though and told me they was going to put me to sleep that was the last thing i heard till i woke up xx
Just reading these posts makes me SO nervous!!! xx
Hi I was at the Highgate & I laid on a bed in a separate room. A cannula was put in my hand, water (I think) went down it, then the aesthetic went in. I remember saying it taste disgusting – it was like at the bottom of my throat. I strangely thought at this moment that this must be what the vampires in twilight feel like haha. & that was my last memory! I don’t remember a mask, or the theatre. The next thing I remember is asking my friend if she had eaten while I was away from the room! Good luck it will be fine. I was petrified as it was my first ever GA. xxx
Does it feel like a long time that your under?
as soon as you close ur eyes you’re awake again, literally feels like 5 mins, any one that’s worried shouldn’t be. Be over before you know it x
Thanks everyone! I’m really scared about being out of control and what if I end up having really bad dreams but can’t wake up?!
It’s really nothing to worry to about they talk to you aswell xx
Mine was the same as Laura’s at the Highgate, walked down with this really nice nurse and had the cannula in the back of my hand then the anaesthetist said you’ll feel like you’ve had a drink she was chatting to me the whole way through about places she’d been near to where I live on her holiday (probably to relax me) definitely worked though I’d had an allergic reaction when I’d had a previous surgery from an antibiotic so was really nervous I was going to feel really poorly again but the anaesthetist spent ages reassuring me before we went down wish I’d got her name because she was such a love!
The nurses in there were super nice too one was holding my hand so I didn’t get too nervous lol. She said the mask was just for oxygen before she intubates you etc I don’t really even remember that part though I know she showed it me but can’t remember even wearing next thing I knew I was awake and it was all done! I guess everyone has a different experience but certainly at the highgate there so lovely and reassuring they talk you through everything too which makes it easier so you aren’t lying there like omg wheres that needle going! You’ll be fine honestly.
xoxo
Hi
I didnt have a mask put on they just put the needle in my hand i felt the stuff go in it was a bit cold and tingly dont remeber anything until I was woken up. Just explain that yoiu are scared they will be great I was terrfifed of being in pain afterwards and kept going on about it whaen they put me under and as soon as I woke up must have done their heads in. I also got a bit tearful just before they put me to sleep and they were lovely to me.
