Heart Murmur

Hi Girls,

I’m booked in for my op on 22nd December. I went for my pre-op last Saturday with the nurse and was asked various questions about my health etc. I mentioned I had a heart murmur which I was born with, which has never caused me any issues or required any treatment. I explained I had previously given a letter to Dr Traynor explain all this from my doctor and the nurse said the letter had been lost basically and wasn’t in my file!! :(. Rather disappointing!

Anyway she requested consent to contact my doctor to get this information again, which I gave her. I’m just concerned that this may cause delays with my surgery as this has happened before when I booked in a few years ago.

Has anyone had any issues with having surgery because of a heart murmur? I’m under the understanding that heart murmurs are quite a common thing and most people have them, without even realising it but it has caused issues before for me in the past and im very worried of it happening again. I only have around 4 weeks until surgery and I just want this to get sorted.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I didn’t have surgery for a heart murmur but was also born with one. Once they found this out, they asked for full medical history, letter from doc to say they happy with me getting surgery and an ECG.

Thank you very much for this. I didn’t have to have surgery for the murmur I just meant i’m worried the heart murmur could cause problems for me having the BA operation.

I have sent in a letter today from my doctor anyway so hopefully they will come back soon to let me know if that is sufficient or not and I can go from there.

They will probably want you to have an ecg and to send in the results, that’s what happened to me! X

Ahh ok, I will wait and see what they decide. I sent a copy of the letter in yesterday from my doctor confirming the details of my heart murmur so I will see what they come back with after that 🙂 x

I had a heart mumur when I was little and I had my pre op last week so had to go to the doctors just so they could listen to my heart so didn’t actually have to have an ecg and all is OK and doesn’t move surgery date 🙂 x

Aww that’s great news @jenna-louise :). I’ve done the same thing and got a letter from my doctors saying there is no issues etc, so hopefully that will be enough xx
