I haven’t booked anything yet but I’m worrying about what to tell work, I work in a supermarket so lots of lifting and carrying stuff. I’m obviously gonna have to tell them something as I will have to do light duties but I don’t really want to explain to my manager I’m getting my boobs done haha!

I don’t know whether to just say I’m going in for an operation so it’s private so I’d rather not discuss it. What has anyone in a similar situation told work? And how did did they react?

My consultation with Mr Traynor went well today too so very excited!!

You could say it’s an operation to your chest/shoulders/back

All of those would mean no lifting etc.
You don’t need to go into too much detail about it, just be vague.

Let’s face it, work are only interested in how much time off you want!

I do have a dodgy back anyway but I don’t know if they’d ask further questions about it! Yeah that’s true haha and I’d be putting holidays in so not as if I’m off sick. Thank you!

I work in a supermarket too (Aldi) and if you’ve experienced it in there then you’d no there’s literally no light duty jobs! We have sometimes as little as 3-4 staff on the shop close so everyone literally has to do there part! The only light duty job for me is on the till and still we have to scan very fast and heavy things do come through the till, I went back to work 3 weeks post op, I originally booked 2 weeks off as holidays but informed them I was getting an operation so would have to take it easy up on coming back (you can get authorised sick note but it does say elective surgery on it so I wouldn’t tell them that your getting just a normal operation, I just wouldn’t tell them what) however my nurse told me I needed an extra week off due to where I worked and I was healing slow so I gave the authorised sick note in for an extra week off, I was okay back on arrival! Till work was fine, didn’t find myself having to go any slower and also cleaning up and stuff was fine! I had to have a back to work meeting where I told them I could not lift anything heavy for a while so they have to listen as it’s on file! You will be fine as the note you get says light duties so they won’t be able to have you stocking shelves etc! Xxx

I’m a nurse and my ward is really heavy! I told my boss what I was having done and I took 2 weeks annual leave and my days off so
    Around 16days off.
I went back yesterday and I’m struggling. I can’t hang the Iv’s up and turn patients.
To be fair everyone on the ward is aware and been really supportive but just becareful when you go back not to over do it xx

Ahh I see thank you! I think I’m only going to be able to take about a week off and I’m not sure what light duties I could do really on my department. It’s proper stressing me out thinking about it, everyone’s so nosy they’d be asking all sorts of questions I can see it now haha. Need to start thinking of what I can say to my manager (who’s a middle aged man haha)

Oh dear Emma that doesn’t sound good, hopefully it’ll get a bit easier for you soon! X

Hey hun! I work in a supermarket too and I swear my supervisors and colleagues are the nosiest ever! Everyone knows everyone’s business but I do not plan on telling them what I am having done, just that I will be having an operation! I have known a few girls to have gone back to work after a week and been fine! I personally will be only booking a week off just because I know that they definitely won’t be happy about me having any more time off! However even when I go back after a week I will just let them know that I’m only able to due light duties! I was thinking I should be ok on the till, but if something heavy comes through then there is usually always a colleague on the till behind me then they could help me put it through! At the end of the day our health is more important and if they aren’t going to let us have the time off then they are going to have to provide some kind of support for us! xxxx

I work in a supermarket too and booked 2 weeks off originally and didnt tell my manager what for, but have only gone back this week after a month off as I ended up having another op due to a blood clot. My manager is super nice so I rang him up and explained I was going in for another op so i wouldn’t be able to come in that week and he was fine about it. After my second op I got a self certificate form from the doctors for the first week, and then a doctors note for the second week. I let my manager know it was confidential and he hasn’t told anyone what op I’ve had, just that I’ve had one and I need to take it easy.
I wouldn’t worry yourself too much over it, as long as you feel okay to work that’s all that matters as your health is the most important! And if you feel you need to have more time off and get a doctors note there’s nothing your work can do about it. Just make sure your manager knows it’s confidential and you don’t want anybody knowing what you’ve had done!
    Good luck with everything xx

Thanks girls you’ve put my stressy mind at ease a bit haha! I don’t work on the Tills, I work on the fresh department so I’m not sure how it would all work out as I can’t just move a different department as my job wouldn’t get done if that makes sense. Yeah my work is always scared people are gonna be off sick so I’m sure they’d rather be on light duties than not there at all! X
