Hello, I have my op on the 29th Jan and MYA just rang saying they need a letter from my doctors to prove I’ve not been taking an old antidepressant that was on my records. Has this happened to anyone else? If so did they cancel your op? MYA said they might need to cancel my op if they don’t get the paper work in 14 days but with it being Christmas I doubt I’ll be able to get the letters by then as doctor told me it’ll take 14days minimum for the letter. So upset don’t know what to do.
What info do they ask Drs for? my dr has said he will fully support me with a letter even before they ask for it. Ive heard MYA are ruthless with mental health and cancellations. Do u know if this is right. I want to set the ball rolling in a few months and id be annoyed if my medical records were being scrutinised just cos i got divorced from a prat who depressed me? lol xx
They told me you had to be on medical for 6 months stable before they even think of operating. That’s the reason I didn’t go with mya. They didn’t care if I had a doctors note to agree I can have surgery.
Yes! This absolutely happened to me! I had my pre operative assessment on Friday 7th December where my medical records were checked over and it came to light that I had taken an antidepressant back when I was made redundant from my job in early 2016, but as they had been on a repeat prescription, there was no end date for it on my file. I was told I had ten days ahead of my surgery on Monday 17th December to obtain a doctor’s letter stating the following three items in order to allow me to proceed:
– The last date I had ever collected a prescription for the medication was March 2016 and that I was no longer taking this.
– The last treatment in any form that I had ever received for mental health conditions had been counselling for anxiety that had ended in June 2017.
– That my GP considered me to currently be medically fit to undergo surgery.
MYA actually faxed a letter requesting all of this information directly to my GP practice for them to respond to, but I chased it furiously every step of the way due to the tight timescale.
My best advice would be to ring MYA to check if they will send a fax over to request the exact information they require for you, too (my GP was originally being a bit funny about writing a letter just off the cuff for me as a result of my own random request, but when when it became a formal written request from another clinician they considered it completely differently), and if so then get confirmation off them of when it will be sent. Then ring your GP practice to check that the request has been received and assigned to your GP and ask what the timescale for response will be now it’s a formal request. Mine were very quick and said it should actually turn around within 24 hours. I then personally made a telephone appointment with my GP to discuss the letter and his response so that I could ensure it had been actioned with all the information required and actually sent back. I then rang MYA again to confirm that they had received it and assigned it to the nurse for sign off. I then requested that they ring me back once it was successfully signed off. It was a very stressful couple of days but I got there!
It didn’t help in my case that the fax kept on rejecting even though the number was correct and so I then had to get an email address off my GP surgery instead, pass this on to MYA and ask get them to resend the letter! And then my GP had actually printed off a paper copy of his letter of response and put it in the out tray for manual collection rather than emailing it back to MYA, so I had to ask if the surgery could do it again by email! It honestly was a nightmare for me and I was terrified as you are of having my surgery cancelled.
You have plenty of time still and should be able to pull this off! You might just have to be really pushy and annoying for a few days, I know I was and my GP practice must have been absolutely sick of having so many calls from me, but it was so worth it in the end. Best of luck! You can do this!
Ove trashed myself to death over this. Also read that they refuse a refund if they find youve got history. My Drs amazing, he is well on side and is going to do me a letter stating it was years ago i had any issues with meds/treatment. Also i have given this lots of consideration and discussed it on numerous occasions with him (which i have) and he deems me in a good frame of mind to make sure a huge life changing decision. Do you think this will satisfy MYA?? Can they refuse to refund ppl?? x
Thanks for the responding everyone I e requested the letter from my doctors they said it’ll take 14 days but I am going to keep ringing and requesting it. Just worried as I went for the antidepressant a few months ago but never took them or went back for them I was just having a really bad time but I am fine now so I think they’re going to cancel on me to be honest I am not hopeful. I’ll keep you all updated
I think you really need to speak with your GP and make sure that they disclose this information in detail in their response letter – have a word with them and make sure that they explicitly advise that although you requested medication and collected it, you did not take any at this time. Maybe see if you can get an appointment to sit with your GP and have a chat through what you need him to say – maybe he can write the letter while you’re there?
Yes I think I’ll need to do that! I’ll ring them tomorrow and see if they can fit me in. MYA have emailed today asking for more information and if I have requested the letter. I’ll update tomorrow and see what they say x
I have! I had it on 17th December as planned and so I’m now on my 9th day post op!
Have MYA defined exactly what they need to see in your GP’s response? They were very specific in my case with regards to what they needed confirmation of, so just be conscious of making sure you tick all the boxes first time to stop you having to go back to your GP again a second time.
My GP was surprisingly helpful and flexible with my request, so hopefully yours will be the same. Keep us posted!
Amazing hope you’re happy with your results! I am going to clarify with the doctors tomorrow about what MYA need they’ve just asked for confirmation from my GP that I haven’t taken the tablets x
Best of luck! It’s early days for me yet, my implants still clearly have a long way to drop and fluff, they are still quite high up on my chest and not as full at the bottom as they will be eventually, but they are getting there slowly and they get better every day – it’s already a huge improvement on what I had before! I’m just so impatient and can’t wait for the end result!
Does mya not understand that people are human and have issues or have had issues. This doesnt mean they cant made life changing decisions, surely a Gp can back that up, this sounds very frustrating for everyone who has had a down time. Gods sake nobodys all rainbows and sunshine their whole lives x
Exactly! I think it’s way over the top. My GP hasn’t got back to me yet so I’ll ring back today and see where abouts they are with it all. I just want to know if I can have the op or not! All this going back and forth is ridiculous!
GP isn’t helping me what’s so ever. They’ve said I need to go see them but won’t give me an app for 2 weeks apparently they’re very busy becuase iof Christmas. So fed up x
Can you get a telephone appointment perhaps? I know the usual appointments tend to get filled up quite quickly but my surgery were able to offer me telephone appointments between set times of the day. It’s very frustrating that they’re being so unhelpful! You’re only asking for something that would take up such a small portion of their time but that would make an enormous difference for you! Keep on pushing, they will have to give in eventually!
I’ve told them how much it means to me, they said because it’s not a medical emergency that I am not priority I asked for a telephone appointment but they said they wouldn’t give me one for what I am asking for as it’s not an emergency. Honestly never known anything like it. They’re being so unhelpful!! So just going to have to wait for the appointment that they’ve given me on the 11th Jan – which isn’t useful as I have my pre op on the 7th so I’ll just wait and see what they say on the 7th x
I hadn’t got my letter yet when I attended my pre op either – in fact it was only at my pre op that it came to light that I needed to obtain one, and then the nurse immediately faxed over the request for additional information to my GP. Maybe the same will happen with you – it would be worth asking the nurse if she can chase it through for you too as I always think that clinicians seem to respond better to requests from fellow clinicians rather than from patients themselves. I just kept on saying over and over to my surgery how much money I had spent on having this done and I think I did everyone’s heads in to be honest but in the end I got what I needed and that’s all that matters. I am confident that you can still pull this off in time! Don’t give up hope!
Hey girls, just an update. Sorry it wouldn’t let me log on the other day. I got the letter from my doctors and MYA are happy to do my op but have pushed it back to 14th Feb. So happy!! Glad I managed to sort it! Thank you for all your help xx
Ah that’s absolutely amazing news I am so pleased for you! I’m glad your GP pulled it out of the bag in the end! It’s so much better to have to wait a little bit than to not be able to go ahead at all – it will all be so worth it when the day comes!
Thank you for your advice! I’ll post a Before and After on here so people can follow the full thread xx
Can’t wait to see them, it must be such a relief to finally have the go ahead!
