    Hey ladies,

This might sound silly but i don’t want my boss knowing why I’m having surgery, he asked but i said its personal. He said that he has to know so that he can put it on my file and has asked for a letter to stating what I’m having done.

So I asked my doctor about it and she said she’s more than happy to give me a note saying ‘private surgery’ and giving me the 4 weeks off but she can only do it when I’ve had my surgery. Which I’m happy with as she said she will fax it over to my boss.

So i told my boss that today and he insist that he needs a letter from the hospital saying exactly what surgery I’m having.

The annoying thing is I’ve actually booked 4 weeks off work using my holiday because the sick pay is just £300 for the month (ridiculous).

Has anyone else had this problem and do HR have to have this information?

    Hey hun,
lol oh my…. I thought ours was bad. I work in a health club (gym and spa). So i do classes 5 to 6 days a week and personal train. Hence why i wont be able to go back to work before the 4 weeks 🙁

Its going to kill me to have the time off but the nurse said its a must. Wouldn’t be so bad if i could go on holiday while I’m off but we can’t even fly lol sad times

They don’t have to have it.

I had a hospital note demanded from me today and to know exactly what operation I was having, my director was even cc’d to the email.

I called and said I could self certify myself for 7 days and that if it extends beyond that I will get a note from the hospital, again I was asked what I had- I said its personal. (I trained as a lawyer so know my rights ha)

HR do not have the right to know exactly what it is you are having done. X

If you’re booking holiday, just tell him you’re going away for a bit?
That’s what I’m gonna say when it comes down to my boss asking, ahaha!
You don’t have to tell your boss anything if it’s booked as holiday, it’s private, so you shouldn’t need a note?
But I work in a scrap metal yard, so what do I know lol, but with my job I don’t have to tell anyone anything as longs as it’s booked holiday. xx

Hi Babe, you are not obliged to tell your employers what surgery you are having if you do not want to and most importantly if a Doctor/Health Care professional has signed you off on sick leave your employer is not insured to have you in work and if anything happens to you, they will be in big trouble. Hope that helps xx

Hey sweet, I had the same problem! But I went to HR and told them I’m having an operation that’s really personal and I don’t want anybody to know what I’m having done. She said it wouldn’t be a problem, but I’m only having a week and a half off, I’m not too sure if you’re having longer xx

    Thanks ladies!
I was trying to search for this info but nothings really clear.

Today he sent an email to all staff saying everyone please keep an eye on Ness as she is due in for surgery. She will be off for 4weeks so take special care.

I was so fuming because now everyone is asking whats wrong. I asked to speak to him and he said he’s rushing off to a meeting. Im now off until Sunday. I am going to speak directly to HR tomorrow. I feel like he’s purposely trying to make me feel awkward.

@nessa That’s terrible of him to do that!
That isn’t how a manger should act at all, he sounds really immature. All because you wouldn’t tell him why you’re having surgery! I would defiently make a complaint or something.
If you’ve booked your 4 weeks, that’s it, end off. It’s holiday, he shouldn’t tell anyone that you’ve told him it’s for surgery.
As he keeps saying he has to rush off when you want to speak to him, maybe write him a letter and leave it in his office, so he has to read what you think he’s done is wrong and not acceptable.

Really hope this gets sorted asap, it’s unwanted stress!!
    xx

    Hey @Demi

Exactly, he is a control freak and just hates when he doesn’t get his way which come across as really unprofessional.

He has yet again sent another email to me asking me to bring in proof of what it is I’m having done. I have read through my contract and it says for sick the first 7 days you’re covered for self certification and then you have to bring a note. It doesn’t say anything else. Also i check with citizens advice and they too say i do not have to give him this information that he is asking for.

But they did go onto to say because i haven’t been working their for 2 years, if he decides to say i can not work there anymore because i am not following his orders then i would not really get anywhere if i wanted to claim unfair dismissal.

It is very stressful and i refuse to give him this information. My friend just told me to copy a basic appointment letter that i have for surgery i had on my ovaries (It doesn’t mention what surgery on their) and fax it over to him. But then thats basically fraud and knowing him he would call that hospital number and ask them lol

Man this is just unfair and I’m feeling cornered.
