I’m planning to have my surgery in August and I’m a little worried about getting time off from work as I have recently started a new job. I’m on prohibition until beginning of August and haven’t dared to ask for time off yet.

Did you guys take holidays for your surgery and recovery, or did you take sick leave? I’m unsure whether I’m able to have sick leave for cosmetic surgery and whether they need to know exact details of the reason for my sick leave if I do? I guess I’m little embarrassed if I need to tell them I’m having a breast enlargement surgery and I work in a small company with majority of them being men so feel a bit awkward about explaining my absence.

Any advice? How have you dealt with taking time off?

    Thanks xx

Ive put annual leave in luv 2 weeks. You can then get a sick note after if you need longer off xxx

I think most ladies take around 2 weeks off and that’s how much I’d have taken but I was moving from one job to another anyway so left my old employer just in time. I know what you mean about being on probation and taking a chunk of holidays during that time might look bad but if it’s during the end of the probation period I’m sure it’ll be okay. Also, I don’t think you have to reveal the details as I was given a sick note from the hospital anyway and it just said the reason as being surgery so rather than taking holidays just ask for a sick note on the day of your op and I’m sure your employer shouldn’t dig further into that. The nurses mentioned they never reveal details of the surgery anyway so instead of wasting holidays just take some sick leave if you can. I got one on the day of my op even though I didn’t need it because I was leaving but just in case if they wanted me to complete my notice period but luckily they let me go early anyway.

I also asked MYA about this and they too said they can do a letter for you to take some sick leave. It can be awkward though and you might decide you’d rather take annual leave but I believe they don’t put the type of surgery on your sick note.
