What to tell work

Hey girls,
I don’t know what to say to work about the surgery. how/what did you tell them? I work as a nurse so I will need to do light duties but I don’t feel comfortable in telling them I’m having a breast enlargement as its personal

I’m was the same as you, I’m a care assistant To the elderly. I wrote a letter to my employer letting them know I’m having a op that will enable my to work for a minimum 3 weeks, I said the operation is of a personal nature and I would prefer not to discuss it. I told them if they wanted a letter from surgeon I will provide one. It doesn’t have to state what you’ve had done, just that you’ve had surgery and need that time off . My employer just said she needs a letter of proff.

Hi Nicky when I had my pre op the nurse done me a letter explaining that I was having surgery, how long they expect me to be off and how long I would need to be on light duties for. I work for the NHS and this letter was fine for them xx

Mya nurse gave me a note which signed me off for two weeks. They even remove references to Mya and don’t mention the type of surgery.
It just says you need to take two weeks off work and upon return only take up light activities and the following few weeks you will be required to visit the clinic for various check ups.

That was fine for my work. Anyone who asked I just said I would rather not talk about it

Hi honey, I was in the same boat as you. I had my Op on Sunday and I just booked 2 weeks off work and said I’m just having a break. Reason being is my boss is a man and I felt very uncomfortable telling him the real reason. I work in a big open plan office and I’ve only told 2 of my colleagues, it’s just tricky as I’m assuming it will be noticeable when I go back to work why I have had time off but it’s my personal choice but I was the same as you, I didn’t feel comfortable telling everyone either as it’s very personal.

It’s good that MYA will do the letter to your employer, I didn’t go through them in the end so I didn’t have this option but returning to work no doubt people will ask questions. It’s a tricky situation!! X

Oh that’s great mya gives you a letter! Be good to give them that. Thank you ladies for all your advice ☺️☺️I’ve got two weeks off annual leave and couple days off requested so hopefully won’t be at work till 18 days post off if all goes to plan xx

Hello Hun, I’m also a nurse. I only told my main manager that I was having some elective surgery for personal reasons. Make sure you check with your surgeon how long you will need to take off as I have been told a minimum of 3-4 weeks. Then my nurse changed the timescale on my sick note letter. I haven’t told anyone else at work, they just know that I am off sick, lots of nosey people trying to find out but I’ve just said its nothing serious and I’m not ill haha they’ve taken the hint not to ask anymore now! Xx

@stacey92 oh my surgeon said 2 weeks should be fine, which I did keep telling him I’m a nurse etc. So I knew 14 days be too soon especially with how demanding our jobs are ? Have you booked annual leave then and then done the rest as a sick note?xx

Oh how strange! It’s crazy how different the advice is from different surgeons.. Yes he said I shouldn’t be lifting or moving equipment for at least 3-4 weeks! I booked a week off as annual leave, as I rang HR for advice.. They said as long as the actual surgery day is annual leave then the recovery will be paid sick leave! So I’ve got the whole of May off pretty much :O
