I’d like to what i should take with me (DAY CASE) and I will be getting there/back on train.
what will I need PO?
what helps with swelling? bruising? throat? and sleeping?
shower? lifting things?
and how the hell can i stop feeling sick with nerves? this isnt good on my already troubling heart. 🙁
thanks for all your help and support on here. xxxxx
Hey hun I had my rhino on Wednesday and I can honestly say you’ve nothing to worry about, it is completely pain free. I had a terrible day yesterday – absolutely dreadful but I think thats because I also had my BA done and I was told it gets worse before it gets better. My bruising and swelling was terrible but already its reduce a hell of a lot already. There is a girl on here who had open rhino the same day as I did and she looks fantastic – she’s been using arnica cream so maybe try that? In terms of lifting things – I think this is just for girls who have had BA and I wouldn’t worry too much about the sleep. It is horrendous to try to sleep upright. Everyday Ive woke up flat on my back. I think its just as a caution (please double check) so we don’t bang our noses by sleeping on our side – I fell to sleep on my side in the hospital and panicked when i woke up and the nurse looked at me very strangely. Good luck xx
hey aw i hope your feeling better hun. i didnt think i could handle getting both done so im going for rhino first. do you happen to know this girls username, would love to see too. do you think with just the rhino i’ll be ok travelling back home on train??x
yea she’s called @laurafaye hun. I would say so yea, the only pain I’ve had is from my BA and the tubes they put down your throat – take some lozenges with you! I have been using difflam spray just to try and take the edge off xx
The most essential thing you need at home are extra pillows, preferably thick / bounce-back ones plus a V-pillow. I just couldn’t have coped without them. I only had a sore throat for around two hours after surgery. I had a honey & linctus syrup from Boots ready at home, and Strepsils, I never used them. You don’t need to take very much with you to the hospital. I took two pairs of pyjamas (posh ones I bought specially because I was staying overnight), in the end I stayed in my hospital gown the whole time. The main thing you need is distraction – tablet / laptop. Toothbrush and paste as your mouth will feel manky after the surgery. If you’re on any medication as I was take the boxes with you, the anaethetist will want to double check them. Take warm overclothes – cardigans / dressing gown, I’d read on here that the Fitzroy rooms are very warm, mine was actually pretty cold. Don’t have big expectations that the Fitzroy is extremely posh / luxurious, it really isn’t, but it’s perfectly adequate and comfortable. In terms of mental preparation, it helped me to break the whole thing down into steps. Firstly – getting to the hospital. That is one thing achieved. Then walking to theatre. Another thing achieved. If you look at the whole picture it can be very stressful and overwhelming. If you like chocolate, have plenty of it at home for your recovery. It’s easy to eat, soft on the mouth, cheers you up and the sugar energises you. If I think of any more tomorrow, I’ll add it. 🙂
Don’t lift things at all if possible. I live alone and yesterday took my rubbish bag outside, down a few flights of stairs. My nose / head felt yuck and was throbbing afterwards. Just think that you must take every precaution to avoid causing bleeding to the inside of your nose. If you have an adjustable showerhead put it on the lowest position and setting so you can wash your body but not get your face wet. My hair was minging after 4 days and I couldn’t stand it any longer so sat on the floor of my shower and titled my head right back and washed it fine, except my fringe is a bit greasy where I didn’t want to get water or shampoo too close to my face. Any jobs that need doing at home, such as hoovering / cleaning your fridge, make sure you do it before your surgery day, as you’ll feel too knackered to it after. Keeping your nose still is extremely important while it’s healing. I read of someone needing a revision rhinoplasty because they kept fiddling with their nose and took their cast of themselves too early. I don’t usually have ready meals but I got some in, and was so glad for them, I didn’t feel up to cooking. Positive frame of mind and embrace the recovery period -being lazy, living in pjs, not having to wear a bra or make-up, personally I find it awesome. 😛
Sorry to make 3 posts in a row, something to bear in mind – a down day or depression is normal during recovery after an operation. It’s do with the general anaesthetic, it very commonly has this affect on people’s brains, coming out a few days later. I’ve had operations before and I got a depression every time. On this rhino recovery I was all fine and dandy and a couple of days ago I sat down and suddenly cried my eyes out and felt very alone. I didn’t even really know why I was crying. The next day I was OK again. It’s good to be aware of this before an operation because it helps if you know it’s a normal reaction and will pass over, and isn’t something you should overly concern yourself with if it should happen to you. x
I forgot – you asked about swelling. Get pineapple juice, but it must be not from concentrate. Some people take Arnica, it comes in tablets or cream. Apparently Dr G isn’t keen on his patients taking Arnica as they thin the blood. For the first 3 days I had swollen eyelids then they went down. Black eyes, they’ve now almost gone. I didn’t bother buying Arnica cream and looking back I think it probably would have been a waste of time / money because half of my undereye is covered with plaster anyway. With these supplements / extras you may be able to achieve a degree less swelling / discolouration but personally I think you might as just well let nature do its thing. Salty foods can increase swelling. Apparently lettuce leaves can help bring it down. When I get my cast off I might go on a course of Arnica tablets just because it’s coming up to Christmas and there’s more social stuff on, but I probably won’t bother. Something I would recommend and this is a bit TMI and gross, but get yourself Senokot tablets. General anaesthetic can make you constipated, but not laxatives, it needs to be gentle assistance! The things we do for beauty, eh. 🙂
Yeah Sherry definitely get some arnica…the cream has worked wonders for me my bruising has pretty much all disappeared and im only 5 days PO 🙂 the nurse recommended it to me. I dont think the sore throat thing happens with everyone I think they might have been a bit rough with the tubes hence why my whole mouth and lip area is in pain. V pillow is a must and ive been having green tea/pineapple as this is supposed to help with swelling xx
Hi hun, do you have anyone to help you with your train journey home? after my op i was quite disorientated, i had an overnight stay so was fine the day after walking out of the hospital but i couldn’t have done it that same day, i would say make sure you have tissue/gauze for your journey home on the train just in case you have a nose bleed, the first time i stood up straight i started to bleed, i was lucky enough that it only bled the once for me. Good luck, im sure you’ll be fine as long as you get a seat on the train. xxx
yeh i’ll have my sister with me, i just hope she’s bloody helpful.lol
ohh…yeh i’m kind of hoping they let me stay overnight.lol
we’ll just have to see what happens on day. thank you. x
oh good, i suppose it will completely depend on how you are after surgery, good luck 🙂 xx
