    hi all

I saw a thread on another forum that other companies are telling girls not to eat garlic for a time before their op. has anyone heard of this? They were also told they should take arnice, which I thought was a no no. Any ideas???

    Thanks x

You mean Arnica. It’s a herb often recommended (in tablet or cream form from boots/ chemist) as it helps ease bruising and swelling. However, both arnica and garlic thin the blood and make it pass more easily through the blood vessels. This can put you at higher risk of heamorrage during your operation, or after, when your stitches are not yet healed. The risk is only small, but it is there nontheless.

Unless your surgeon recommends taking Arnica, don’t take it until 6+ weeks after your BA/ operation, when your scars have healed up.

You should be absolutely fine eating garlic in small amounts. It’s only really a problem when you’re taking lots of blood thinners at once xx

Ah I thought that was the case with arnica but other clinics were telling girls to take it, I’ll be avoiding it just in case! Didn’t know about the garlic tho, thanks for the heads up!

I took arnica prior to my op but my bruising was pretty bad and beyond lasted four weeks! I’m prone to bruising tho

my surgeon said arnica was ok, unless you have had issues with thinning blood previous or you have a low platelet count in your blood. he said i could take it 1 week before if i wanted but i didnt bother in the end. i’m 2 weeks post op today and i’ve had hardly any bruising xx
