    Hi ladies.
I have my consultation with Dr.Singh next Thursday and am very excited. I just have one concern really apart from that I’m completely and head over heels excited.
My mum and my grandmother both had breast cancer and due to their age during their cancer they’ve decided that I need to be screened (well, more I decided as I want to get looked at as it scares me!!!) so I told my GP who referred me to hospital – just today I had a letter saying I have to fill out attached questionnaire, basically meaning I have to dig up my family tree and find out who’s had what which is going to take a good amount of my time and patience, and I’ve then been informed in the letter that once it’s sent off I may have to wait months for my “application” to be processed?! I have never had a screening before – I’m clearly at high risk as its genetic, that’s who I’m seeing, the geneticist, but I still am not put at any kind of priority?! Am I not a worry?!
Oh well I’ve been really upset since finishing a long day at work and reading the letter, MYA were really lovely and said a screening is done post op.
My question is, does the screening they do pick up any abnormalities or anything? I realise it’s not a cancer screening – like the ones in the hospital, but say if I’m waiting months for the hospital to see me and I get my boobs done and then have one, would it pick up any problems that could be due to cancerous cells?
I’m in a very stable financial position and I know this is what I have to do. I’m so excited I can’t explain as I have something like £200 left to save for my deposit. This means so much to me, I’m feeling so upset today that the NHS are so darn useless, not my first experi and nice, I was suffering deep depression at age 16-18 about the way I look, (mainly my boobs) came out the other end after it all with a brave face and just lost all belief and trust in the NHS as they were so unhelpful and unreliable, I had no family to turn to as none of them knew, due to circumstances they couldn’t have either. I confided in my GP who was constantly off on leave etc and I never really had anyone. All the GP’s I saw said the same, wait until you’ve ended puberty and we will see if there’s any possibility of you having a BA on the NHS. It was never followed through, but since then I’ve been focussing on other things and I beat the depression with the hope in mind I would get stable and pay for them myself.
So I have no trust in the NHS. I just feel really let down and disappointed now, all of this hard work for the NHS neglect back when I was younger, that brings so many memories, and now this, they don’t even care that I see stories in the paper every day about people being misdiagnosed for cancer and I am petrified. I have a track record for worrying about unnecessary things, but this is just stupid.

Please ladies I need you, please talk to me I’m reaching out. I need to talk about this.. Not felt this low for a while. I know I’m so close to my goal, and feel like I’m being pulled back again. I’m going to ring consultant tomorrow and talk to her.. But I really want your opinions and stories, I don’t care if they’re not relevant, every post matters.. I don’t say this stuff out loud I suppose I’ve been confiding in this forum a lot lately.
I hope you’re all well, feel free to add and private or public message, I really appreciate it xxx

Why not see how much it would be to go private for the screening? May be a quick process if you can’t wait I’m not sure though lol x

Hi hun. I had to go through a similar process recently so hopefully my experience will help you. I booked my BA months ago but 2 months before my op I found a lump in one of my boobs, this concerned me as my mother, my grandmother and my grandmothers mother all had Breast cancer (my mother was the youngest to be diagnosed as 41) so naturally I panicked and went straight to the doctors the following day, I was referred to the hospital for an ultrasound, this came through pretty quick for 10 days later. The ultrasound picked up the lump and I then had to be seen by the specialist Breast doctor. She reassured me straight away that it didn’t look like anything to worry about and she suspected it was Fibroadenoma which is basically just a build up of tissue, however due to my family history she wanted a biopsy to be done just to know for definite. I had to wait 2 weeks for this appointment (again – quite fast for the NHS I think) I was also given the family history pack to complete the same as you, I sent this off the same day and had a response within a couple of weeks. The letter basically said that they are in the process of gathering the information they need to provide me with the most appropriate advice based on my family history, they said they will endeavour to contact me again within 18 weeks but due to a high number of referrals to the clinic it may take longer.
So my advice would be try not to worry, I know it’s natural instinct due to your family history but just rest assured that if you did find a lump the NHS would fast track you like they did with me. Luckily my biopsy results did come back as a harmless Fibroadenoma and I was given the go ahead for my BA.
Hope this helps, good luck x
