Have my BA planned in around 11 weeks, mega excited! :) But just worried about recovery and getting back into exercise. I do alot of exercise and just wondering if anyone has had any problems getting back to exercise after the recommended 6 weeks?

    Thanks in advance x

    Hi Roxy

Im 11 days post op and have been mobile since day 1… I found if I sat around I felt so stiff so just tried to get on with things. I’ve had no pain, taken no painkillers and felt brilliant. Been walking everyday and was pushing the trolly round the suprmarket on day 4/5 lol

I think you’ll be fine getting back into exercise, the thing to take into consideration is break back into it gently. Im gonna wait til 6 weeks then have a few days of just going thru the motions of bench press, shoulder raises, tricep extensions etc just to get the feeling back for doing them. Then start off with 5kg weights and build it up over about 4 weeks i think, little and often til im back to 55/60kg like i was pre op.

It does feel different after your BA cos you’re getting used to this feeling of something on your chest but by 6 weeks im sure that feeling will go. I know on day 2 i was very aware of these 2 big bumps on my chest lol but today i dont notice them at all really unless i lean forwards and then they pull a little.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, Thats really reassuring, It’s the only thing putting me off having it done. Six weeks is a long time not to do any exercise :( – don’t want all my hard work to go un-done :P

But like yourself am planning to walk everyday, and build it up gradually again. Do you think i will be ok to start back exercise classes after the 6 week mark, or would going at my own pace, doing my own thing in the gym be more sensible.

Did you have overs / unders hun? The surgeons recommended overs for me, still undecided on size at the moment.

    Thanks for your help x

I had overs…. The concern of being an invalid for weeks was all that put me off too but this has been amazing at how little pain i’ve had and how much i’ve been able to do. I washed my own hair over the bath on the Wednesday night and had had my op on the Tuesday morning! I’ve just made sure if i’ve bent down its with my kness and not with my back… posture has improved because of it too!

Definitely have at least a week of making sure you know your limits before you go back into any classes. What do you do? Spinning, RPM, Bodypump… that sort of thing? Lower body stuff should be fine, sit down bike, and (i’ve just motioned it like a freak in my living room) cross trainer should be ok too as its in your shoulders and not your chest… Build up treadmill, even if its a fortnight of high incline walking on a high speed… MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A REALLY GOOD SPORTS! Literally strap the bad boys down!

You could ask one of the trainers at the gym if they can recommend a different programme for you that targets building up chest strength slowly too x

My bloke is a bodybuilder and his dad owns a gym so he said when im ready just come down and he’ll run me thru some upper body exercises to get me going again. x
