right the thing is, ive booked my operation for 5th Dec (after having to move it 5 times already but long story).
And i recently started my new job at the beginning of october, and my manager is aware that I have an operation coming up but I haven’t specified what kind of operation because im scared lol.
So the other day my manager asked me to bring in my appointment letter from the hospital and I was like yeah ive got my doctors note at home.
But then she was like “well haven’t you got ur hospital appointment letter? By the way is this operation medical or cosmetic, because if its cosmetic you cant take it off as sick”
So i jus panicked as I was on the spot and not necessarily in a quiet room, and said it was medical but didnt wana talk about it coz i was embarased.
So ladies, plzz help. What do i do? because if I lie and carry on acting as though its medical then go in with bigger boobs then that could potentially ruin my chances during my probabation, because i lied.
But if i tell her the truth, dya think she will let me use my last three days of holiday and then two days as unpaid sick or wteva during my recovery?
Helllppp xxxx
owww hun…tough one!! …. part of me is tempted to just tell her but do it at the right time on a one to one level..act genuinely sorry etc. however she sounds a bit of a bitch to be fair..wanting to see the doctors note already. My boss isnt the best but as I only had 8 days hol this yr left and my surgeon said I defo need 2 weeks (im having uplift & ba) I had to say to her im so sorry but im having a personal operation and I need 3 more days off. she just said hun its fine. i felt AWFUL though as she seemed concerned about me and …its for surgery. more worried about not being able to do certain things at work..ie pick up things etc. Are you going quite big hun? ive started to pad myself out everyday to make it not so dramatic when its done xxx
if you told them about the op before you started then surely they have to give you the time off??? no matter what its for, couse the 2 days will still be unpaid anyway, so i think i would tell her its cosmetic, if you really want this job
but it is a hard one… good luck hun…x
lets just be honest hun, i appreciate she needs a note. – but maybe ask your gp for a letter?
They should respect confidentiality – i used my holidays but told them i needed it off for an operation.
not once did she ask what it was for – because as my manager said – its personal private business and is not theirs xx
I would ask your manager 4 a chat and say you needed to speak to her- then tell her you was embarrased to say it infront of people because you was embarrased and its persinal (make her feel sorry for yu) then say how down you have been for years due to your body and decided to have a ba and thats why you need the time oFf xx
I would ask your gp for a note for recovery after surgery to take to work, if you can’t get one I don’t think you should lie and risk loosing the job, just explain you were embarrassed to say at the time and if you can’t get holidays maybe unpaid leave as you’ve had the surgery booked for a while and I’m guessing you’ve already paid a deposit and more.
If your gp does give you a note have something prepared to say as at my workplace if you have time off sick you have to have a chat with a manager to discuss if any surgery will be necessary in the future or if it would effect your work!
With regards to her asking for a appointment letter I don’t think all medical surgeries have to be done at the hospital, for all she knows you might prefer to pay privately.
I think your lucky that you have a female manager mine are all blokes
Good luck hun! let us know how you get on
xx
I’m the same! I told my manager I’m taking holidays for a op they asked wa type and I said! They are really ok with it and told them I don’t want anyone to no it’s for me not other people and dnt want everyone to be she’s the one with the boob job. Anyways your can’t take sick holidays but normal holidays they can’t say no unless someone else has taken them lol. Hope this helps xx
Thanks ladies, all your comments have really helped
I’m gona look in the diary at work today to see if anyone else is off work that week of my op and if not then she can’t really say much if i use that week as holidays and two days sick (i hope).
Shes just one of them managers that can be really nice sometimes, but then sometimes a total bitch and i just cant figure her out.
But anyway ill let yas know how i get on

HI Hun. I had the same at work. i told my manager what I was having and booked 7 days off as holiday. With the weekend it gave me 9 days, I went back to work for 3 days after was found it to hard. I was so stressed and in pain and felt my boobs were going to explode. So I spoke to the nurse at Mya and she said I needed the rest of the week off and they did me a note for work. I took the rest of the week off as sick and felt alot better. Im sure if you have anual leave you must have a day back at work to be able to go sick or you cant book it, something like that. So maybe go back in for 1 day then call in sick for the rest of the time you need. Hope all goes well for you hunnie.xx
Hi hun, personally with you being on a probationary period, regardless to the situation companies can be bloody arsey during this time!
How much longer do you have left on your probation? I say this as it may be worth postponing once more until your permanent position is confirmed?, only because it sounds like u have a right jobsworth as a boss and although you didnt deliberatly keep it from her you don’t want her to think of you as untrustworthy either and taking days off sick during probation is also risky too – i say this as well as you don’t want to give her any reasons to not take u on permanantly at the company.
Regardless I hope you get it sorted hun xxx
Well ladies, I went into work today and asked my deputy manager if I could have a look at the diary to see what holidays i have left, and I have 3 left to book. However the week that i have booked for my op quite a few ppl are off aswell so if i did come clean, I know id definitly not be able to have it off.
So although its risky I think im just going to give her my doctors note (since HR told me that, thats all ill need to provide) and then when I go back into work ill jus wear clothing that doesnt make them seem so obvious, since im not goin big anyway.
I just hope it all works out, what dyas reckon?

Regardless of how long your probationary period is you are NOT safe in any job until you have been there 51 weeks, as unless it is a protected characteristic you are being discriminated against you cannot claim a thing. PP’s are a management “tool” only and not employment law. To often I have seen people perform well for the duration of their PP and then slack off once it’s “completed” and be surprised at their quick dismissals as they thought they were “safer”.
I started my job in June, had my op on Sept 29th. I took 7 working days holiday and rang in sick for 5 days (therefore not requiring a fit note as it was within the 7 calendar days).
Did you let them know at interview/when you started that you required some time off? Any self respecting company would honour it.
If you have a fit note then you have a fit note, unless it says “fit for restricted work” their really isn’t much they can do. I for one would not advocate taking annual leave when you are in fact not well as it is counter productive, however I have been in the same position so I do understand why people do it especially when you are in a new job.
This is prime example that honesty, majority of the time, is the best policy. Myself as a Manager would prefer my subordinates to advise me of any planned impending absence so I could plan sufficient cover rather than have it dropped on me from a great height. Your Manager sounds like an idiot, albeit a clever one to have already worked out that it might not be for a medical reason!
Sounds to me that you are damned if you do and damned if you don’t…I guess you have to decide which is lesser of the two evils my dear.
Let us know how you get on. xxx
Thanks Nikibockerglory, its helpful to hear from a managers perspective, if you was my manager i would have no problem telling you lol.
So as a manager urself, is it applicable that i would need to provide my hospital appointment letter eventho i have a doctors note? or dya think thats just a way of my manager being nosey?
Its such a shame that i feel as though I have no choice but to lie to her but im too scared to find out what would happen if i told her the truth.
And because im 20, working with a small group of women aged 35-60, i can already tell what their impression is of me so i don’t want to make their impression a reality. But that goes with both ways of the scenario.
Telling the truth – Young and Vain.
Not telling the truth – Young and Untrustworthy…
Its so frustrating because its all i can think about and its making me so anxious that I cant look forward to my BA because of it.
