I had my surgery on 23/01/2019 and wanted to share my story with you all. My original admission time was 1pm which to be honest, I was a bit gutted about. So when I got a phone call on 22ndat 3pm from MYA to say, actually would you mind coming in at at 10am instead, I jumped at the chance. I wanted an early appointment so I didn’t have time to stress myself out to much.
We arrived at a very snowy, first trust hospital in Preston at around 9:45, signed in and by 9:50, my amazing nurse Jen came to collect us and take us to my room. I was given a hospital gown and the sexiest paper knickers you will ever see haha. She asked me to nip in the toilet once I was all sorted and leave her a little wee sample for her to test to make sure I wasn’t pregnant.
My nurse Jen, come back to my room at roughly 10:15am to go through all my paper work, check all my details, do my blood pressure, check my temperature, and measure my legs for socks so she could make sure they we’re the right ones (I’m 6ft 1, I have this issue with closes, never thought I’d have an issue with some hospital socks haha) and asked me to pick from the menu what I wanted to eat and drink after surgery.
At around 11:10am the doctor came in to meet me and introduce himself, he just wanted to ask a few questions and arrange what medication I would be taking home with me.
There was a little bit of a wait after this, my boyfriend and I sat and watched a bit of tv, and I managed to have a little nap. The Anaesthetist came in at 1:30 to check and my details and explained the GA to me, he was such a nice man, Ravi I think his name was. He really put my mind at ease and answered all my questions.
My totally fabulous Surgeon, Mr Giannas come in to see me at 1:45, he drew on me, went through all my details again and took some photos. He could tell I was nervous and went through everything with me, he has such a caring and calming way of think. Instantly makes me feel better and works his magic. Can’t always find much of his work online, but trust me girls, don’t let that put you off because he is bloody amazing, I cannot recommend him enough.
I went down to theatre at 2:05, the theatre staff were all so bubbly and kind, all very chatty and take your mind off everything happening, I feel like that time flew by, Ravi put my cannula in and said you will feel drunk I a few seconds, I did, for about 5 seconds. Closed my eyes and then remember waking up what felt like a couple of minutes later in recovery, with 3 ladies stood around me. I was still pretty much out of it at this point so couldn’t tell you anymore only that somehow I ended up back in my room at around 3:45, and eating toast and drinking tea by 4pm.
Mr Giannas, come in to check me over, I still wasn’t really with it but my boyfriend said he was very happy with how my surgery went, that he hopes I have a good recovery and to say bye, and he would see me in 3 months time at the clinic for a check up. Jen came in every 30 mins following surgery to do my obs and to check if we wanted anything.
I have pressure on my chest, and everything feels very tight which is to be expected. I called for a nurse at 7:20pm (Jen had gone home by this point but the new nurse was just as lovely) to let her know I was going for my first wee following surgery, so with that she went away and got all my medication and paper work, by 7:45pm we left the hospital for home. I would recommend taking a pillow in the car to go between boobs and the seat belt, and also a neck pillow. Absolute life savers.
I am so very happy with how my whole experience has gone, starting back in September when I had my first consultation with my PC, the beautiful Natalie in the MYA Manchester, all the way through. My journey with MYA couldn’t have gone any smoother, and I will always and forever be grateful to them. If you are feeling nervous or putting off having surgery because of feeling scared, please don’t. I have waited 12 years to have mine, due to nerves and anxiety but you only live once, do it now. Life is too short to let feelings get in the way of doing something for YOU xxx

I wanted to put my story up because I read others before mine, and it helped me massively so if I can help just 1 other person that would be great. When are you having your surgery Sarah, who is your surgeon? Xx

Thanks Carmen, glad you had a good experience too, Dr Giannas is the best, isn’t he. I’m quite sore and the band is very tight so hard to breathe but I’m doing ok, thank you. I hope you are doing well too and you have a fast recovery xx
