Hi, sorry i know its off topic i was just wondering if anyone on here has ever been given anti depressants? I went to my GP yesterday because i’ve been really stressed with work lately, and i was hoping she could give me some anti anxiety meds or whatever normally helps people goinng through busy/stressful period in their life. She asked me to fill out a form to gage how best to treat it and she said she thinks i’m depressed as well as anxious. I dunno how to deal with that, ive never considered myself depressed, even though i have been abit down lately. My GP has started me on a course of anti depressants, anti anxiety and sleeping medication. it just all seems to much. anyone else had a similar experience? Please help!

Hi honey I’m a mental health practitioner that questionnaire you filled in is normal procedure when visiting a GP with stress/anxiety/depression symptoms. Follow her advice with the medication the questions you answer form part of a general depression scale so try not to worry too much. 1 in 4 people get depressed but with the right treatment be it medication or some talking therapy it doesn’t need to get too bad. Has she referred you to a mental health team at all. I work with patients suffering with anxiety and depression x

Hi scarlett, thankyou for replying! that has really put my mind at ease in a way, my GP didnt explain everything very well. no she hasn’t refered me to anyone, she’s started me off on low doses of medication and im going to see her again in 2 weeks before she ups the dosage, is this normal procedure? she said that after this 2 week period she would see how im getting on with the drugs (any side effects or whatever) and see what talking therapy or counseling would be best suited.

That all sounds familiar hun there’s a period of watchful waiting which is the gp tryin medication and seeing if that helps! Talking therapies are more about the ongoing management of problems! I work in a service that provides that support of its felt it’s needed . Try not to worry hun sounds like you’ve got enough on your mind as it is! The medication may be just what you need to put you back on track! I’ve been on them myself in the past and I remember those anxieties but there’s nothing wrong with it hun. Everybody can get stressed or anxious or feel low. I think gps can sometimes be quite handy with dishing out labels that worry people xxx

Hi hun, im also a mental health nurse and id be slightly more reserved when it comes to advising jumping into taking all those meds. It seems awfully full on to prescribe them all at once following just one visit of this nature, maybe take the sleeping tabs and even the anti anxiety ones but see how you go without the antidepressants, and then if there is no improvement following better sleep, etc, give them a shot. Maybe its not what you wanted to hear but ive come across alot of gps that are too readily giving out medications when there are possibly other alternatives such as talking therapies mentioned above. As you also mentioned most medications come with a hole host of side effects and its impossible to know how any individual will react to each type so watch out for those as well cos only you kno how you feel. And like the post above says dont worry about labeling how you feel, alot of people at some point in their lives encounter stress and depression (if in fact you are depressed) and it is nothing to feel bad about. It will get better, keep thinking positive xx

thank you both for commenting back! i’ve been talking to my partner and my mum about it last night and they were just as shocked as i was when i told them everything i’d been given after just a 20 minute chat with the GP. however, the doses are only 10mg which my mum said is a very low dose so i think im going to give them a go for the next two weeks and see how i get on. i’ve calmed down now, i think it was just more the shock of her giving me three different meds that made me all wound up and worried! but thankyou both for your advise! when i go back to see the GP i’ll ask her about different talking therapies i can get involved with

    xx
