I’m thing of a career change into hairdressing. I had a look around the sak’s academy in London yesterday and it was amazing! If I could afford to go I really would. Has anybody on here trained with saks and was it worth the extra money you pay for the name?

What ever course I choose I will have to pay for as I’m “mature student” now lol, but want to avoid collage courses as I know there will be school levers there and1. I will feel really old and 2. I know I messed about at collage, so there will be the same going on there.

The saks course is NVQ l 2 and is fast track for 6 months.

Also with the recession is there many jobs in the hair industry at the mo? And I know it’s cheeky but how much does the average hairdresser earn?

Hiya, how old r u? Wen I did my hairdressing course wen I was 16 I was the youngest there! My 3 best friends were 25-29 & the oldest person was 50! if u train at college u learn every technique. If u get trained by saks u learn the saks way. A few of my friends got taught by top salons n they all said it was horrendous. From bein at the “bottom” to the pay! You have to be a good hairdresser to get by at the moment, if u work in a shop I’d say prob minimum wage-£7/8 per hour. I’ve been qualified 12 years now n I’m self employed, I average at £300 for 16 hours to upto £700 for 35-40 hours!

    Hope this helps xxxx

Hi iv had someone in today that has been to sak’s woke iv been on maternity all all I can say is SHOCKING! This is not the first bodged job iv had to fix. I don’t know what they get taught but it’s not very good I’d defo say do not waist your money going there! I did an aprentaship and you get out what you put in. Good look with your decision xxx

Thanks girls. I’m 26 now and looking to do it late next year so that’s why I worry about collage lol!

Also as I will have to support myself studying I’m not sure if I can live 2 years working part time, and I don’t have a serious partner to help me with rent (independent women yea! Haha!)

The saks course is only 6 months so I could manage that, but it’s soooooo much more money to do! (10,000!!! That’s my morgage savings gone!)

The other option is apprenticeship for a year. It’s so hard as it’s something I really want to do but the money is such a big issue at the mo!

Do you both enjoy your job? Whats best/worst things?

Sooo not worth it! You’d get help with benefits if your a single person that would help. Don’t waste your money, that’s a serious rip off! N your not too old for college. There will b tons your age xxx

I’ve just finished an apprentership in barbering. Usually 2 years I qualified in 9 months finishing my apprentership in a year as i am 22 and classes as too old lol it’s bloody hard work and not as easy as you think :( its not only learning all the hair techniques in that time frame it’s the customer skills, getting models and clients coming back to you, selling yourself and confidence in producing something that someone wants! I’m not sure of the age thing now with apprenterships as last year it changed with funding of that it’s now under 19 ( I signed just before it changed) I was put through college in 9 weeks and taught in shop by an award winning barber!!! Pay is what you make it if you don’t get clients in for yourself then your pay will be minimum!! It’s a bloody hard place out there at the mo too :(. But go for it. College is weird when your the oldest one there but you just put ya head down and study. Sorry for the essay lol xxx

Yeah it’s hard because you start as a junior just like you would do at 16 17 so in that respect that was my hardest thing to overcome! :( I’m glad I did it but you don’t really go in it for money either! I’ve found out also the law is changing with self employment in these fields so we have changed so we are all employed as it will be coming into force soon enough! You have to work really hard some days and others it so quiet! It’s a great social job meeting so many different people but also I think it’s quite nerve racking lol doing a cut top notch and in a time frame and forming a relationship with the client so you make them come back to you!! Your only as good as your last cut too :). Where abouts are you from Sarah? X

I’m training for a new job at 35! Most of my class are younger than me and ones only 19! Don’t let it put you off wherever you go, it’ll get you where you need to be. I don’t notice age diff most of the time cos in my head I still think I’m 21, maybe thats it?!
