During surgery nerves can be stretched, pulled, or compressed (just from being in one position too long, the pins and needles sensation that you get from something “falling asleep” is really your body saying you’re putting too much pressure on a nerve for too long, you need to move..) Nerves heal VERY slowly but they do normally heal. They only grow about 1 cm per month, so depending how much damage the nerve sustained depends on how long it will take to heal. The numbness/tingling is a good sign because the nerve is still alive and is healing, that sensation will go away when the nerve is fully healed. if a nerve was just stretched a little you might only get those weird sensations for a couple days/weeks PO, but say you had a 6cm compression of the nerve, it would take about 6 months to heal.
