Hey girls, im 3 days PO and my swelling is really at its worst. Firstly i just had puffyness on my eyelids, now there’s bruising in the corner of my eyes and my cheeks are blown out like a hamsters. can someone please tell me when the swelling, for them, subsided? i thought every day was meant to get better!
Another thing is im getting stitches out Monday (5 days PO), and cast off on Saturday (10 days PO). is this too soon? Iv seen some girls wait 7 days for stitches and 14 days for cast removal!
And finally, i changed the tissue thingy that catches discharge/blood from nose, and i have so much dried blood around my nose i want to clean it but im scared of doing any damage! Did you guys clean the dried blood off yourselves?
Thanks so much to anyone that answers. Im finding the recovery period really hard

Hi honey hang in there the swelling varies from person to person,it can hang around for months but does subside a little more each day,re the dried blood stay away from touching the inside of the nose,I used clean cotton balls soaked in warm water to soften and clean the dried blood but it you feel nervous dont touch it at all your nurse will clean it when you see her at the post op appointment.xxx
I had my open rhino on wednesday too! And I’m exactly the same as you! So so swollen…I thought it was just me an I’ve been googling like mad! I think Monday we will start to see things gets better. I find one thing gets slightly better and then something else gets worse! I have cleaned around the entrance to my nose but only very gently! Also it’s so hard to not move my nose especially when eating or talking etc. I’m scared everything I do will ruin it! My bruising looks horrible:( but I keep thinking about the end result! Are you still taking pain killers? Xx
Thank you tina!
ah charlieh90 so relieved you feel the same! my eyes have got a little better but now my cheeks are horrendous! ive never seen them so blown up! im gonna try clean around the entrance too, and just try to be really gentle because im having to put the tissue/swabs under my nostrils still just to cover the dried blood. Still taking the pail killers but mainly ibuprofen for the swelling rather than paracetamol, but i do before i sleep just so i can be knocked out and not wake up with any pain! when are you getting your stitches and cast out?
Yeah I’m the same so don’t stress! It’s not the nicest recovery process is it?! I wasn’t expecting it to be quite like this! My stitches are coming out Tuesday’s which is 6 days but my cast isnt off til 12days. But I’m tempted to try and make that a day later. Your dates seem early for it to come off? I though mr gonschior was really specific and likes the cast on for a long time? Xxx
definitly worse than i expected! i know i called ydy to see if it was too early but they said its okay! i have to get back to uni on monday after the cast is taken off and cos theyre not open on sunday, sat was my only option! hopefully its all alright! had my op in the morning aswell so wednesday was like a full day recovery too! xxx
Hi girls,
Yes it’s an attractive process to go through I was swollen for the first two weeks and your skin gets quite dry, a bit like being a teenager again lol x
With cleaning around the stitches I saturated a cotton wool ball with warm water and was just very gentle, the stitch removal was fairly painless too, only felt the first one then it was all over very quickly.
Enjoy your healing you will feel great when the cast comes off, just be very careful and take it nice and easy xxx
Hi girls I was just wondering if anyone knows why its a few days between having stitiches out and cast off can they not be done together? As I have to travel a bit to get there is there any chance of leaving the stitches a few days longer? thanks xx
Hi chick26
I’m assuming the stitches need to come out as soon as sensible as otherwise your skin might tighten around them as it heals and make it more painful (which it isn’t when they are done), best to check with your nurse though, or she may say you can see a local nurse if you have a long journey, can’t hurt to ask! X
Aw thanks Abigail I called today but still waiting to hear back, hope I can just don’t fancy having to get trains and tubes on my own more than once with my cast on lol and its a long journey. So did you find havibg the stitches rempvwd was painless? Xx

Yes, you know about the first one it feels like a pinprick, then you don’t really notice the others, I was expecting it to hurt!
My friend came with me as I was worried about going out on the bus, but was really surprised that people don’t stare, only one bloke who nearly fell over lol people are more sympathetic than you imagine.
I’m so excited for you, just remember how I felt when the cast came off!
Good luck hon x
Hey, I had my op on thursday and my swelling since yesterday has got worse and worse. My face is so swollen and tight! Didn’t expect it to be this bad to be honest so just hoping it will go down a bit over the next few days!
Has the inside of your nose swollen up? Mines totally closed up so can’t breathe at all! Hoping this is normal?????
Roll on 2 weeks hey

hi girls
yes swelling does get worse before it gets better! day 3 is like the worst day as far as i can remember!! most of my bruising was gone by 2 weekns but had one stubborn bit that stayed for over a month! so annoying!!
i wouldnt clean inside the nose at this stage but lust below is fine, just soaked a cotton bud in saline or warm boiled water.
keep taking the ibuprofen…will help with swelling and sleep sitting up if you can.
icing the cheeks is a good idea as well and east very heathily…lots of green veg ie spinach and brocolli. they contain vit k which will heal the bruising.
i took arnica and bromlain supplements as well…not sure if they helped though but i thik they did. xx
I had one black eye for about 6 weeks, grrr! Soap & Glory’s trick or treat concealer was fantastic as it’s so creamy and easy to apply as you need to be gentle around the area.
Mind you I was the only person to notice the bruising!
First couple of weeks I was green and swollen so a dead-ringer for Princess Fiona!!!

It takes a while I had one stubborn bruise that took 4 months to go… 4 months!!! It is now 7 months po and I do not know if it’s in my mind but I can see it sometimes faintly. Good luck with the swelling and brusiing. Arnica helped.
