rhinoplasty done!

I came across this forum recently, and since I had a rhinoplasty done with MYA, I thought I’d share my experience with anyone who is considering have one done.

When I was younger, my nose used to be straight, but after some trauma I had happen to my nose, it began to form a slight bump. My nose still looked straight from the front, but I didn’t like the side profile. I became more and more conscious of it, especially because I believed my nose shape had changed due to trauma.

I had been thinking about having a rhinoplasty for about 5 years, but never got around to sorting it out due to other responsibilities. However, I did do a lot of research about rhinoplasties and the different companies that offered this procedure. I went to a few consultations, and met different surgeons. Out of all the consultaions I went to, I have to say that I immediately felt that MYA was right for me. They were really friendly when I went for my initial consultation. I was nervous but everyone at the clinic was welcoming and I felt a lot better.

Although my family and friends supported me, they had always insisted my nose looked fine and so I was worried that I was going to be told that I didn’t need to have one done. I spoke to Jodie about my concerns about my nose and she was absolutely lovely. She listened to everything I said and was very understanding about why I wanted a rhinoplasty done. Jodie gave me the name of my surgeon (Mr Stefan Gonschior) and told me about his background as a maxi facial surgeon. This made me feel more reassured that I was getting the best surgeon for my requirements.

I decided to meet the surgeon at a second consultation, and I am very glad I did. Stefan was brilliant. He asked what I would like have done to my nose. I explained to him in the best detail that I could, even showing him pictures of profiles that I liked. Stefan was very patient as he looked at the images I showed him, and he let me explain everything to him without interrupting so I felt like he really listened to me. Stefan then had a look at my nose and told me what he would be able to do. He was realistic and didn’t make any false promises. He explained all the risks, and what the procedure would include. I liked how he was very honest and understanding. He knew I was nervous about the procedure but his calm and collected manner made me feel like I was in good hands. I told my mum as soon as we left that I wanted Mr Gonschior to be my surgeon

So, not long after (about two weeks after my consultation with Stefan) came the date for my rhinoplasty! It was in high-gate in london, and it’s a nice private hospital, away from main roads and busy london life! It was quiet and pleasant and when I was shown to my private room, I was very comfortable. It wasn’t like a typical hospital room at all. It had an ensuite, I had a television, a comfy bed, so I was happy and less nervous. The nurses were professional and I felt safe and excited!

I met Stefan again just before the operation, and I insisted on bombarding him with more images! He explained to me again about what I would be having done, and I felt reassured.

I am not a fan of needles and so I was wary when it was time for the anaesthetic. However, the anaesthesiologist was really kind to me, and the nurse had a great sense of humour! I was too busy laughing to feel too scared and I fell asleep soon after I was given the anaesthetic. I remember that my last thought was of my family and when I heard voices coaxing me to wake up, I thought it was my mum, but it was the nurses! My eyes felt heavy, sort of like when you have flu. I wasn’t in a great deal of pain, I just felt drowsy and it took me a little while to adjust. I was wheeled back to my room and moved onto my bed. The nurses helped me get comfortable, even though I was a little grumpy from being tired. I sneezed a few times, and this frightened me, but the nurses assured me I was ok. I stayed overnight in the hospital and I was waited on hand and foot. I had food bought to me whenever I wanted, at any time. It was great. The painkillers kept the pain at bay; it was more uncomfortable than painful though. I didn’t have any major bruises at this point, and I was grateful!

My parents came to pick me up the next day as it is vital that you don’t travel in public transport. Don’t travel alone if you are thinking of doing that! Although I wasn’t in a lot of pain, I was sore and the recovery is just as important as the surgery. When I got home, I cropped my pillows upright as this is how I was told I should sleep to avoid a lot of swelling. It was a bit weird at first, but I got used to it after a day or two .My eyes became a little more bruised for the first two days and I felt like my cheeks were swollen, so I used icepacks for about 10 mins every few hours which made me feel better. After these two days, I didn’t have an more bruising. I took my painkillers everyday and changed my bandage. I was told beforehand that swelling will make the tip of my nose appear larger, and so I didn’t dwell on the fact that it looked a little piggy! Having a bandage covering the bottom of your nose is a bit uncomfortable in that you feel stuffed up, but it’s not painful. My mouth used to be really dry in the mornings as I couldn’t and didn’t breathe through my nose, so it’s a good idea to have a drink handy incase you feel really thirsty!

So for about a week, I just relaxed at home, watching movies to keep my mind off my nose, and I avoided looking in the mirror as I knew there would be swelling and I didn’t want this to scare me! I then had my stitches taken out by the nurse. I was terrified by this as I had read stories about people saying how painful it is. I was pretty much a nervous wreck when I saw the nurse at MYA but she was excellent and it didn’t even hurt much at all, oddly, it was kind of satisfying having the stitches out! lol. Right now, I’m back at home and still have the cast over my nose. I feel almost normal, although I don’t do any strenuous exercise and my nose does throb a bit. Its not painful at all anymore and so I have stopped taking painkillers. I get annoyed when my nose feels itchy so I try not to think about it! Jodie and Karen (my nurse at MYA) have called me to check up on how I have been doing. I thought that was really nice and thoughtful of them My nose feels a little blocked at the moment, but other than that, I feel fine. I’m excited to see what my nose looks like when the cast comes off in a few days, and I will write and let you guys know what happens then! I hope this has helped any of you that are thinking about having a rhinoplasty done. I know it’s a pretty long post but since I’m just relaxing at home, I’ve got a lot of time on my hands!

how do u feel about ur new nose after cast off?

do u mind if i ask for some pics? im considering revision rhinoplasty and thinkin of a mya surgeon too it would be great if i could see some genuine before and after pictures

Im a bit too shy to put up any pics just yet! I had the cast taken off 2 weeks ago. At first, I was full of mixed emotions to see my nose because i thought it looked a bit too small and the bridge looked too wide. As the days have gone by though, the swelling has gone down and my nose has started to look like it did b4 the trauma. The tip still feels so hard and numb, and so Im hoping this will go down. I liked my nose b4, even with any trauma as it was narrow and the right length for my face, but i really wanted the bump to go which it has. I’m really hoping the swelling will go down on my tip as it looks fatter than before, but i’m being patient and giving it time since it has only been about 2 weeks. I trust my surgeon as he knew what he was doing and he told me about how much swelling i wud have, and that i just have to be patient. My surgeon is really nice and honest and i believe that i just need time, since my swelling has gone down since the cast did come off, so it makes sense that it will go down more.

There are many youtube videos where people have documented their rhinoplasty progress and those clips really helped me. I don’t know who their surgeons were though. I’m still glad I chose Mr Gonschior though because my nose is healing well, i dont have any asymmetrical swelling, and as far as i can see, he did exactly as i asked. I just want the swelling to go! lol

I was wondering if anybody here has an ethnic nose and is currently considering rhinoplasty or has had rhinoplasty??? If so please post back as i am currently considering rhinoplasty within the next 0 – 6 months and would like some help regarding what surgeon to go for, cost and maybe even looking at some pictures of before and after surgery!

And also scared that i will not like the result.
