    Hi all

Just thought I would post a few words about my experience to help any of you out there who is thinking about having rhinoplasty.

I was booked in with Mr Gonschior and had an admission time of 10am at Highgate. I arrived at about 9:30am and was shown my room at about 10am. It was nice and clean and rather large. I set myself up and unpacked.

The nurse came in to check a few details, made some obs and asked me to get dressed in my gown, paper pants (HOT!) and stockings. She then explained that the aneathetist would come to visit me, followed by Mr G for a final consult.

A little later on the aneathetist just asked some standard questions and said she would see me later.

Not too much later Mr G came in (looking even hotter in his surgical gear!) and asked me if I had any questions. I explained that I didnt but that I wanted to clarify what shape nose I wanted (as I was so nervous that I hadnt managed to articulate exactly what I wanted)… so I went through what kind of nose I wanted and gave him a few photos I had gotten off the internet (I also randomly teared out a mag advert pic whilst in the hospital that I liked…and to that pic he said that if he could choose a nose for me that that would be the one…so I was reassured about my choice). I also explained that I wanted a very slight slope as I didnt want anything too extreme and he told me how that he could try but couldnt guarantee certain results within a couple of mm as everybody heals differently and therefore one person could heal with a slight slope and another could heal with a straight nose, I said that that was fine and we left it at that. He took my photos and said that he had another nose to do before mine and so he expected me to be in theatre in about 2 hours time.

I waited the 2 hours a little longer and got called down to theatre at about 2pm. I was asked to take off my slippers and dressing gown before I walked into the actual theatre room. I walked in and expected it to be a lot bigger and fancier but it was small. I hopped onto my bed and the nurse made lots of sweet convo with me to try to keep my mind busy as she hooked me up to different monitors. It was super cold in there but they wrap you up so you soon get warm (and I dont think everybody has to go straight into the theatre itself). The aneathetist was a little late, she spologised and put the needle into my arm. The next thing I knew the nurse put a mask over my mouth and nose and asked me to breathe deeply, at which point everything went fuzzy and it felt really nice :) and then GONE!

I woke up about 2 and a half hours later. Everything was a little blurred as you have this gel stuff put in your eyes to protect them. I started coughing (I had an annoying cough before the op)and because I still had the tube down my throat I started choking a little, I was trying to sit up and sub consciously put my hand over my mouth but the nurses thought I was trying to touch my nose so wouldnt let me….after what felt like quite a while of choking and not being able to breathe properly the nurses thought to take out the tube…at which point I was fine and could breathe ok. It wasnt the nicest of waking up but it does sound a lot worse than it was. Just try to REMEMBER when you wake up to open your mouth and breathe because you might automatically try to breathe through your nose (which you wont be able to do).

I came around in my room and didnt suffer from any pain or even a sore throat. I managed to eat ice cream and I asked for pain killers as I thought i could start feeling me nose twinge a little. Remember to order something to eat that isnt too chewy or crunchy.

My parents left at about 9:30pm (but could have stayed later) and I just chilled out and watched tv. I slept relatively well but woke up early. I felt fine in the morning but I made sure I asked for pain killers just in case lol. The nurses attended to me and I ate breakfast. Mr G came in and advised m of a few things and then I was able to leave, at about 9am.

Since then I have felt a little delicate but absolutely no pain. I have suffered from a constant headache (but at Day 5 it has finally gone) so 4 head and migraine strips have been AMAZING! At Day 5 post op I feel pretty much back to normal. I think it must take time for the anaesthetic and drugs to come out of your system. I also managed to clean up some of the dried blood today which was sooo gross. The cast is a little annoying and itchy at times but not horrific. I would say the worst thing about the whole thing is the bad back you can get from having to sleep upright and the headache at the start…so in the grand scheme of things, not much.

I have posted some pics for those who want to see the healing process. And any questions you may have…just ask…I’m happy to help as this kind of stuff really helped me.

    Mwah.

I feel really good now. Just normal but with a cast on my face even though I dont look normal :/ but glad I feel better. I had quite a down day thinking “oh poop, have I made a mistake” but I feel much more positive now. I definitely can see a difference already, not really with the size so much because it’s hard to tell with the cast and swelling but defo with the shape. My nose was round and now it’s more angular.

How about you babe? You feeling okay?

    Hi all

    Just a quick update…

I had my stitches out today and was a little nervous as I have never had any out before and also because I didn’t know how I’d feel someone touching my nose etc. It was absolutely fine. The nurse was really good, she cleaned my nose and took the stitches out. I think everyone is different but I had 4 to be taken out. It wasn’t painful. It was a slight pulling sensation. I found her cleaning it a little more strange (again, no pain) … my nose feels numb but you can feel pressure when the nurse cleans it. I think its more of a mental thing, or was for me, just knowing someone is touching it and pulling stitches out – makes me feel a little funny lol. So I feel a lot better not i’m all clean and know that I’m that one step closer to getting the cast off (OMG!)

Also, I forgot to mention in my first post about the packing. I think this shows how much of a small deal it ended up being. The nurse came in in the morning after my op to take the packing out and it was literally over in seconds, no pain or discomfort just another bizarre feeling. It did feel a little more gross without the packing in as I could feel that everything was a bit wet up my nose and that was a bit yucky knowing it was probably the blood.

    Hi layla

Yeah I had a tube still in my throat when I woke up….you’re so out of it though I didn’t feel it or anything. Even when it got taken out, I can’t remember feeling anything.

One week on I’m feeling hunky dorey, completely normal. I still have a little bruising under my eyes but my swelling I had on my cheeks/jaw is pretty much gone. It’s strange feeling so ok yet looking bit funny still. I’m also sleeping a lot better. Even managed a 10 HOUR sleep the other night lol.

Aww glad your healing so quickly!! How long did you have to take off work? Sorry if you mentioned this already but how long till you need to get your cast off?

I can imagine its very hard to sleep, i think i will be too scared to sleep as i move around so much normally!! All this to look forward to ey!

Ok that really freaks me out but hopefully i will be too out of it to notice.. and the packing dosent sound too good either.. not sure i want to know what that is!! I suppose you just have to remember these things are over in seconds and you only have to do it once!!

Ahmed honestly you’ll be absolutely fine. You will be looked after well and they will know if you’re nervous so they’ll help that little bit extra. And you won’t even really be aware if the tube… The only reason I knew is cause I heard them say “take the tube out” lol. Not sure if everyone has it still there either… But honestly, I can’t even really remember it, you’ll be the same :) xx
